Do you remember Lush 99.5FM?
7 years ago, Mediacorp ceased Lush 99.5FM as part of its rationalization towards radio station network. From 1st September 2017 until today, the frequency FM 99.5MHz is vacated and unused by any Singapore new radio player.
In December 2021, Mediacorp launched an online only indie radio station which plays indie pop, hip-hop and rock songs, known as "indiego", actually Mediacorp IndieGo is a spiritual successor of Lush 99.5FM, but it is not available on frequency transmission platform.
Among all English radio segment of Mediacorp radio network, Mediacorp has 5 English languages radio stations currently on FM radio frequency platform with different format such as:
* Gold 90.5FM (Classic hits)
* Symphony 92.4FM (Classical music)
* Class 95FM (Adult contemporary)
* 987FM (Latest hits and hot contemporary)
* CNA 93.8FM (News)
If Mediacorp reuses FM 99.5MHz for IndieGo, Mediacorp will have 6 English language radio stations, meanwhile Singapore will have 20 radio stations.
7 years ago, Mediacorp announced to merge Singapore indie music to CNA 93.8 and 987FM after closing Lush 99.5FM, but Mediacorp launched IndieGo 4 years after as online only radio station. To reach more listeners who love indie music, Mediacorp can launch IndieGo on FM 99.5MHz, but the frequency approval is subject to the decision of IMDA (Infocomm Media Development Authority) as frequency award is based on a tender by IMDA.
Many years ago, IMDA had an opened tender of vacant frequencies FM 89.3MHz, FM 92.0MHz and FM 96.3MHz to new radio players who are interested to broadcast, at last Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) won the tender, so FM 92.0MHz is Kiss92, FM 89.3MHz is Money FM, and FM 96.3MHz is Hao FM.
The participants had to submit their proposal of the radio format to IMDA, then the only nominated radio players are awarded the frequency by IMDA.
What do you think if Mediacorp launches IndieGo on FM 99.5MHz?
Can they give 99.5FM to astro to launch goxuan in johor/sg
ReplyDeleteUnder an agreement between MCMC, KOMINFO and IMDA of border frequency coordination in Johor Bahru, Singapore and Batam, FM 99.5MHz is not allowed to be used by any radio station in Johor Bahru and Batam, unless Singapore let go the frequency, but currently FM 99.5MHz is being reserved by Singapore.
