Listen to Mix FM in Labuan on 101.6MHz (Kota Kinabalu frequency from Bukit Karatong)

Mix FM can be tuned weakly in Labuan via Kota Kinabalu frequency 101.6MHz, transmitted from Bukit Karatong.

- Frequency: FM 101.6MHz
- Power: 2kW
- Transmitter site: Bukit Karatong, Sabah
- Receiver site: Bandar Victoria, Labuan
- Distance: 136km
- Receiver: TECSUN PL-380

In Labuan, Mix FM Kota Kinabalu frequency 101.6MHz from Bukit Karatong transmitter has adjacent channel interference with RTM Sarawak FM 101.5MHz from Limbang (Bukit Mas), but less obvious.

Cats FM radio reception in Labuan

Cats FM is a Malay-Iban language commercial radio station based in Sarawak. It is available in entire Sarawak region and small part of Sabah via frequencies transmission, but what about Federal Territory of Labuan?

In Labuan, by comparing with RTM Sarawak FM, Cats FM is more difficult to be tuned there, regardless 88.7MHz from Bukit Mas Limbang or 88.2MHz from Bukit Tiong Lawas.

On 30th March 2025, I managed to log in two Cats FM frequencies in Bandar Victoria, Labuan.

In Labuan, the possible Cats FM tuning frequency is either 88.7MHz or 88.2MHz.

1. Cats FM 88.7MHz Bukit Mas Limbang 1kW (65km)

2. Cats FM 88.2MHz Bukit Tiong Lawas 0.5kW (48km)

Videos were recorded near Agro Bank Labuan on 30th March 2025, approximately 1630 hours.

Based on the radio reception videos above, none of them can be received clearly in Labuan, instead interference.

As Cats FM 88.7MHz from Bukit Mas has 200kHz frequency separation with RTM Nasional FM 88.5MHz Bukit Timbalai transmitter, so there is an adjacent channel interference if I tune to Cats FM on 88.7MHz in Labuan.

Meanwhile 88.2MHz from Bukit Tiong Lawas is also very weak in Labuan, but for certain areas, I can detect the interference noise of RTM Radio Klasik FM 88.1MHz Lawa Mandau transmitter when I tune to Cats FM on 88.2MHz.

In conclusion, Cats FM is needed to be tuned via online streaming platform in Labuan because it's frequencies on 88.7MHz and 88.2MHz are very weak.

Era FM Sarawak 101.3MHz and Hitz FM 105.8MHz from Bukit Lambir, Miri, Sarawak are the furthest radio stations tuned in Labuan (184km tuning distance)

In Labuan, alongside local radio stations, and distant radio stations from Kota Kinabalu, Brunei as well as Limban, I can detect two radio stations signal from Miri (Bukit Lambir), namely Era FM Sarawak 101.3MHz and Hitz FM 105.8MHz.

For Hitz FM, in Labuan, it is tuned on 100.8MHz from Kota Kinabalu (Bukit Karatong), but I can detect a very mild radio signal of Hitz FM on the frequency 105.8MHz which is transmitted from Bukit Lambir for Miri, Sarawak. Compare between 100.8MHz and 105.8MHz, Hitz FM 100.8MHz is clearer than 105.8MHz in Labuan.

For Era FM, it has different content between Era FM Sabah and Era FM Sarawak. In Labuan, although Era FM Sabah 102.4MHz from Bukit Karatong can be tuned with moderate to weak signal, but Era FM Sarawak can be received with very weak signal there on 101.3MHz from Miri (Bukit Lambir).

By calculating the tuning distance, from Bukit Lambir to Bandar Victoria, Labuan, it is 184km.

In conclusion, the furthest radio stations tuned in Labuan go to Era FM Sarawak 101.3MHz and Hitz FM 105.8MHz from Bukit Lambir.

3. Sinar FM 104.9MHz and Hot FM 87.7MHz are not receivable in Labuan due to Limbang FM 104.9MHz and Radio Klasik FM 87.6MHz.

4. Tea FM 102.8MHz from Bukit Karatong is not included in the list due to the strong signal of Sabah VFM 102.9MHz Bukit Tampalagus transmitter.

Kota Kinabalu commercial radio stations (TX: Bukit Karatong) received in Labuan

Do you know? Alongside RTM radio stations, actually we can tune to Kota Kinabalu radio stations in Labuan via frequency transmission.

From 30th to 31st March 2025, I manage to record the video of tuning 11 Kota Kinabalu radio stations in Labuan Island. Here are the radio stations that I tune in Bandar Victoria, Labuan.

1. IKIM FM 93.9MHz

2. Eight FM 95.7MHz

3. Kupi-Kupi FM 96.3MHz

4. Melody FM 98.6MHz

5. Hitz FM 100.8MHz

Videos are recorded at the various locations of Bandar Victoria such as Dataran Labuan, Labuan Fountain Roundabout and road near Perbadanan Labuan. These radio stations are only receivable outdoor, the listeners in Labuan are advised to tune these radio stations indoor via online streaming, unless using special and good quality receiving antenna.

All Kota Kinabalu radio stations are transmitted from Bukit Karatong, the tuning distance is 136km.

Among 11 Kota Kinabalu transmitted radio stations, Hitz FM 100.8MHz is the clearest and most powerful one tuned in Labuan because it has no adjacent radio stations nearby 100.8MHz.

Hot FM 87.7MHz from Bukit Karatong is not available in Labuan due to RTM Radio Klasik FM 87.6MHz Bukit Timbalai transmitter.

IKIM FM 93.9MHz has interference with Brunei's RTB Nasional FM 93.9MHz Andulau transmitter.

Tea FM 102.8MHz is very hard to be tuned in Labuan because it has strong adjacent channel interference noise from Sabah VFM 102.9MHz Bukit Tampalagus transmitter.

Sinar FM 104.9MHz from Bukit Karatong is not included in the list above because it has co-channel interference with RTM Limbang FM 104.9MHz Bukit Mas transmitter, meanwhile the frequency is dominated by Limbang FM completely in Bandar Victoria.

In Labuan, Mix FM 101.6MHz, Era FM 102.4MHz, Lite FM 103.2MHz and MY FM 104.0MHz have adjacent channel interference with RTM Sarawak FM 101.5MHz, Traxx FM 102.3MHz, Ai FM 103.3MHz and Red FM 104.1MHz from Bukit Mas respectively, but these radio stations have no interference obviously when the listeners tune them via car radio receiver.

Dear all Labuan radio listeners and the travelers, wish you all the best for tuning the radio in Labuan.

1. Labuan FM 89.4/103.7MHz

2. Sarawak FM 101.5MHz

3. Sabah FM 97.9MHz

4. Limbang FM 104.9MHz (9 pagi hingga 12 tengah hari sahaja)

Brunei radio stations tuned in Federal Territory of Labuan, Malaysia

Back to Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2024, I had managed to DX Brunei radio stations signal in Batu Niah and Bekenu, Sarawak, Malaysia.

In 2025, I monitor again Brunei radio stations signal during Hari Raya Aidilfitri eve, but different location, now it is in Federal Territory of Labuan, Malaysia.

Here are the videos of tuning Brunei radio stations in Victoria, Labuan (54km from Bukit Subok).

1. Al-Quran Radio FM 89.1MHz (Bukit Subok)

2. Kristal FM 90.7MHz (Bukit Subok)

3. RTB Pelangi FM 91.4MHz (Bukit Subok)

4. RTB Harmoni FM 94.1MHz (Bukit Subok)

5. RTB Pilihan FM 95.9MHz (Bukit Subok)

The signal of these Brunei radio stations above are moderately clear in Labuan, except RTB Nasional FM 92.3MHz and RTB Nur Islam FM 93.3MHz.

==RTB Nasional FM==

RTB Nasional FM 92.3MHz from Bukit Subok has co-channel interference with RTM Ai FM 92.3MHz Bukit Timbalai transmitter in Labuan, but it can be tuned alternatively with weaker signal on FM 93.8MHz from Andulau.

==RTB Nur Islam FM==

RTB Nur Islam FM 93.3MHz from Bukit Subok is also unavailable in Labuan due to co-channel interference with Sabah VFM 93.3MHz Bukit Timbalai transmitter in Labuan, but it can be tuned alternatively via FM 94.9MHz from Andulau with weak signal.

In Labuan, both RTM Ai FM and Sabah VFM are not really affected by Brunei radio stations interference because they can be tuned alternatively via Bukit Tampalagus (Sabah VFM, Ai FM) and Bukit Mas (Ai FM) transmitter by following frequencies below:

* Ai FM 99.9MHz and 103.3MHz

* Sabah VFM 102.9MHz

By recording all Brunei radio stations signal, I can target the Brunei radio listeners who travels to Labuan and share about the magical of radio frequency transmission to Bruneians.

* FM 101.5MHz Bukit Mas (Limbang) 1kW - 65km

RTM Sarawak radio stations (Sarawak FM, Red FM and Limbang FM) are still available in Federal Territory of Labuan via Limbang frequency FM 104.1MHz

Alongside RTM Sabah radio stations (Sabah FM 97.9MHz and Sabah VFM 93.3/102.9MHz), and Labuan FM (103.7MHz/89.4MHz), actually RTM Sarawak radio stations (Sarawak FM, Red FM and Limbang FM) can be tuned in Federal Territory of Labuan via frequency transmission platform.

On 30th March 2025, in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri holiday, I pay a visit in Labuan and have 3 days 2 nights stay there to conduct radio DXing activity. In Labuan, I manage to tune RTM Sarawak radio stations via frequency platform.

1. RTM Sarawak FM

* 101.5MHz Bukit Mas (Limbang) 1kW - 65km

2. RTM Red FM

* 104.1MHz Bukit Mas (Limbang) 1kW

3. RTM Limbang FM/Wai FM Iban

* 104.9MHz Bukit Mas (Limbang) 1kW - 65km

Videos are recorded in Victoria, the capital of Federal Territory of Labuan.

By comparing all RTM Sarawak radio stations signal monitoring videos, Bukit Mas transmitted frequencies are the best tuned in Labuan.

Meanwhile signal from Bukit Siang-Siang and Bukit Tiong have no signal in Labuan, but Bukit Sagan Rudang (Medamit) has little signal there.

Overall, RTM Sarawak radio stations can be tuned in Federal Territory of Labuan via Bukit Mas transmitter by following frequencies below:

* Sarawak FM 101.5MHz

* Red FM 104.1MHz

* Limbang FM 104.9MHz

Although Lundu is covered by Gunung Serapi radio and TV transmitters, but some of DX radio stations from far transmitter can be detected in this town.

Alongside several Indonesia radio stations from Sambas and Entikong, there are DX radio stations from Sarikei (Bukit Kayu Malam) and Sri Aman (Bukit Temudok) detected in Lundu, Sarawak by Sarawakians_12.

Today, the Sarawak radio DXer, named Sarawakians_12 has managed to tune several Sarikei and Sri Aman transmitted radio stations in Lundu, Sarawak. He tuned these radio stations in Lundu town near RHB Bank Lundu.

1. RTM Sri Aman FM 89.5MHz from Bukit Temudok (186km)

2. RTM Nasional FM 90.3MHz from Bukit Kayu Malam (201km)

3. RTM Sarawak FM 91.5MHz from Bukit Kayu Malam (201km)

4. RTM Sibu FM 94.6MHz from Bukit Kayu Malam (201km)

5. Cats FM 96.7MHz from Bukit Kayu Malam (201km)

Based on the videos above, in Lundu, RTM Sri Aman FM 89.5MHz has very mild signal, meanwhile RTM Sarikei radio stations from Bukit Kayu Malam (Sibu FM 94.6MHz, Sarawak FM 91.5MHz and Nasional FM 90.3MHz) are mostly zero signal, but the signal of Sarawak commercial radio station Cats FM 96.7MHz from Bukit Kayu Malam can be detected weakly there.

Compare between RTM radio stations and Cats FM from Bukit Kayu Malam, Cats FM 96.7MHz is stronger than RTM radio stations (Sibu FM 94.6MHz, Sarawak FM 91.5MHz and Nasional FM 90.3MHz) in Lundu, Sarawak. Despite all operate at 1kW transmitter power, but I believe they have different TX antenna system configuration.

In conclusion, Cats FM 96.7MHz from Bukit Kayu Malam is the furthest radio station tuned in Lundu, Sarawak.

FM radio bandscan in Tamparuli, Sabah by Kisah Alkisah

Tamparuli is a small town in Tuaran District of West Coast Division, Sabah, its distance is 38km from Kota Kinabalu, the region capital of Sabah. The postcode of Tamparuli is 89250.

Regarding the radio stations coverage in Tamparuli, Sabah, the town is covered by Bukit Karatong and Lawa Mandau which mainly covers Kota Kinabalu.

On 23rd March 2025, the Sabah radio DXer on YouTube, Kisah Alkisah published the full FM radio frequency bandscan in Tamparuli, Sabah, covering from FM 87.5MHz to 108.0MHz.

Here are the available radio stations in Tamparuli, Sabah (mostly local tuning)

* 87.7MHz: Hot FM Bukit Karatong

* 88.1MHz: RTM Radio Klasik FM Lawa Mandau

* 88.9MHz: RTM Nasional FM Lawa Mandau

* 89.9MHz: RTM Sabah FM Lawa Mandau

* 90.7MHz: RTM Traxx FM Lawa Mandau

* 91.9MHz: RTM Ai FM Lawa Mandau

* 92.7MHz: RTM Sabah VFM Lawa Mandau

* 93.9MHz: IKIM FM Bukit Karatong

* 95.7MHz: Eight FM Bukit Karatong

* 102.8MHz: Tea FM Bukit Karatong

* 104.0MHz: MY FM Bukit Karatong

Tea FM 102.8MHz signal is weak in Tamparuli, Sabah, compare to other radio stations.

Other radio stations such as Melody FM 98.6MHz, Mix FM 101.6MHz, Lite FM 103.2MHz, Sinar FM 104.9MHz and Bernama Radio FM 107.9MHz are not detected in Tamparuli, Sabah because their signal are weak there. Astro "secondary" radio stations such as Melody FM, Mix FM, Lite FM and Sinar FM never reach coverage in Tamparuli because they operate at low power transmitter as much as 0.25kW only, meanwhile the "primary/core" radio stations like Era, MY FM and Hitz are using 2kW transmitters.

Bernama Radio FM 107.9MHz likely operates at 0.5kW or 1kW transmitter power, meanwhile Tea FM 102.8MHz is likely at 1kW.

For RTM radio stations, the signal from Lawa Mandau is clearer than Layang-Layang in Tamparuli, Sabah.

Why is CityPlus FM still transmitted from Negeri Sembilan covered Gunung Telapak Buruk transmission tower for Klang Valley?

It is about 8 years of OOGA X launched the Malaysia's first ever Chinese business radio station, CityPlus FM.

Back to the history, CityPlus FM carried trial transmission on 26th October 2016, and it was launched officially on 2nd May 2017, but it is transmitted from Negeri Sembilan's Gunung Telapak Buruk on the frequency FM 106.0MHz to cover Klang Valley, causing weaker radio reception in Klang Valley. In Klang Valley, CityPlus FM 106.0MHz is mostly not clear.

Until today, CityPlus FM doesn't have clearer radio transmission in Klang Valley. Why does it happen?

1. In Klang Valley, there is no longer having vacant radio frequencies for FM broadcast, regardless Gunung Ulu Kali or Bukit Sungai Besi transmitter site.

2. As now defunct Red FM from Star Radio Group terminated its Seremban frequency 106.0MHz in June 2009 (while Red FM was ceased in September 2016 after being acquired by Astro Radio), the frequency was vacated in between June 2009 and October 2016, fortunately CityPlus FM was awarded by MCMC with this frequency by taking over Red FM former Seremban frequency slot.

3. Before CityPlus FM used 106.0MHz in Gunung Telapak Buruk, MCMC had already assigned the frequency FM 106.2MHz to Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) for Nasional FM's Bukit Fraser transmission to cover Raub where is a blindspot coverage of 95.3MHz Gunung Ulu Kali transmitter. As RTM Nasional FM used 106.2MHz in Bukit Fraser transmitter site for Raub, it caused CityPlus FM was not able to use either 106.1 or 106.2 in Gunung Ulu Kali to cover Klang Valley clearer. This means Nasional FM 106.2MHz frequency assignment was earlier than CityPlus FM 106.0MHz, so nothing action can be done to improve CityPlus FM coverage in Klang Valley until today.

In between November 2016 and January 2018, I made a proposal to CityPlus FM for having clearer coverage in Klang Valley by suggesting to use FM 106.1MHz or 106.2MHz in Gunung Ulu Kali and terminate 106.0MHz Gunung Telapak Buruk transmission. During that time, I did not realize there was Nasional FM 106.2MHz Bukit Fraser transmission until December 2017. When I had a trip in Lanchang to visit the elephant farm on 31st December 2017, I only realized there was 106.2MHz used by Nasional FM when I tuned the radio randomly.

When Nasional FM used 106.2MHz in Bukit Fraser, none of radio stations are allowed to use either 106.1 or 106.2 in Gunung Ulu Kali because both are not far each other, therefore CityPlus FM was forced to cover Klang Valley by using Gunung Telapak Buruk transmitter on the frequency 106.0MHz.

Gunung Telapak Buruk mainly covers Negeri Sembilan (except Tampin), but it is receivable in part of Klang Valley, Pahang, Melaka and Johor.

Regarding CityPlus FM 106.0MHz coverage, outside Negeri Sembilan, it could be tuned moderately and weakly in Klang Valley, part of Pahang (notably Bera, Muadzam Shah, Temerloh, Chenor, Maran, Jengka and Jerantut), small part of Melaka/Johor.

Cats FM radio reception in Batu Niah, Miri Division, Sarawak

In Miri Division, Cats FM broadcasts on the frequency 93.3MHz, transmitted from Bukit Lambir. It covers Miri, Bekenu, Kuala Baram and Marudi.

In Batu Niah, it is the blindspot coverage of Bukit Lambir transmitter for TV and radio broadcast, so the public broadcaster RTM (Radio Televisyen Malaysia) added the gap filler transmitter in Bukit TT844 for Nasional FM and Sarawak FM to cover blindspot coverage of Bukit Lambir transmitter in Batu Niah and Suai, meanwhile digital terrestrial television service provider MYTV added Gunung Ancharang transmitter to cover Batu Niah and Suai.

As Cats FM does not have the gap filler transmitter in Bukit TT844 like RTM radio station, I was interested to inspect its radio reception of Cats FM in Batu Niah, Miri Division, Sarawak last year in March 2024, so I flied to Bintulu, then I drove to Miri and stopped in Batu Niah during Hari Raya Aidilfitri to test the radio reception of Cats FM.

Back to 11th April 2024, I compared two Cats FM frequencies signal in Batu Niah, Sarawak on 93.3MHz (Bukit Lambir) and 88.3MHz (Bukit Setiam) by recording the videos.

* 93.3MHz Bukit Lambir (51km)

* 88.3MHz Bukit Setiam (130km)

Between two frequencies, Cats FM 93.3MHz is clearer than 88.3MHz in Batu Niah, Sarawak. Although Batu Niah is the blindspot coverage of Bukit Lambir transmitter, but Cats FM 93.3MHz is still clear there.

In conclusion, Cats FM is still tuned on 93.3MHz from Bukit Lambir transmitter in Batu Niah, Sarawak.
