From 01.04.2021, the Thai national broadcaster Radio Thailand will cease certain AM provincial radio stations and some FM stations. According to the sources, there are 41 stations to be closed down, and frequencies will be returned to NBTC.
I'm not certain which regional radio stations are about to be ceased, but I just know there are many Radio Thailand AM stations in southern region and selected FM provincial stations to be closed, also two Bangkok based AM stations too.
==Bangkok based Radio Thailand AM stations to be ceased on 01.04.2021==
* AM 837kHz
* AM 918kHz
==Southern region based Radio Thailand provicial stations to be ceased on 01.04.2021==
* Betong AM 1026kHz
* Surat Thani AM 1215kHz
* Satun FM 99.5MHz
* Satun AM 1206kHz
* Songkhla FM 102.25MHz
* Pattani AM 1296kHz
* Krabi AM 720kHz
* Krabi AM 963kHz (Education network)
* Songkhla AM 558kHz (Education network, but already ceased many years ago)
* Phangnga AM 1341kHz
* Chumphon AM 1377kHz
* Phatthalung AM 864kHz (already off air many years ago)
* Trang AM 810kHz
* Nakhon Si Thammarat AM 639kHz
* Ranong FM 105.75MHz (Education Network)
For other provinces outside Southern Thailand region, most of Radio Thailand AM provincial stations were ceased for a long time.
I believe the decision of Radio Thailand to shutdown AM broadcasts for provincial stations for following reasons below:
* Less people listen to the stations on poor audio quality AM band due to growing of digital listening
* As selected Radio Thailand provincial AM stations are just simulcast of FM stations, so Radio Thailand decides to reduce duplication by shutting down AM transmission.
After Radio Thailand closed down AM radio stations, I think the broadcaster will improve its exsiting provincial FM stations transmission to reach more coverage and provide clearer reception in the involved provinces respectively.
For Satun province, I don't understand why Radio Thailand Satun closes down FM 99.5MHz, despite 99.5 and 95.5 are different content. After FM 99.5MHz Satun second station is closed down, I suggest Radio Thailand Satun should increase FM 95.5MHz (flagship station in Satun) transmission power to 1kW to 2kW to reach more coverage and listeners. In addition, FM 95.5MHz can reach Malaysia with clearer signal reception.
In Surat Thani, the province will remain only AM 1242kHz (Education Network). In my opinion, Radio Thailand can transfer Surat Thani Education Network from 1242kHz to 1215kHz to avoid interference from Voice of Vietnam VOV-5 AM1242kHz (Can Tho) at night. So, after transition, AM 1242kHz Surat Thani can be closed down, and Education Network continues broadcast on AM 1215kHz in Sura Thani, Thailand.
Besides that, for RF analysis in Thailand-Malaysia border region, as Radio Thailand Songkhla FM 102.25MHz is having 150kHz frequency separation with Malaysia's THR Raaga FM 102.4MHz from Gunung Jerai which causes adjacent channel interference in Perlis and Northern Kedah, Malaysia, there will have no interference when tuning Raaga FM 102.4MHz in North Kedah and Perlis after Radio Thailand Songkhla FM 102.25MHz is closed on 01.04.2021.
