Unlike Mediacorp and SPH (Singapore Press Holdings) radio stations, So Drama! Entertainment (formerly known as SAFRA Radio) radio stations 88.3 Jia FM and Power 98FM are not transmitted from Bukit Batok, instead their own Defense Technology Tower B. Why?

Singapore is a small country in ASEAN region, it has 19 local radio stations, operated by Mediacorp, Singapore Press Holdings and So Drama! Entertainment (SAFRA Radio), most of the radio stations transmitters are located in Bukit Batok, except So Drama! Entertainment radio stations, 88.3 Jia FM and Power 98FM.

Honestly 88.3 Jia FM and Power 98FM were used to locate their transmitters in Bukit Batok transmission tower for a moment, I spotted this information via So Drama! Entertainment open tender to supply, test and commissioning the solid state FM radio transmitter for its radio stations in Bukit Batok 5 years ago. I concluded that 88.3 Jia FM and Power 98FM were transmitted from Bukit Batok during that time after reading the tender information.

However, my friend from Singapore has recently tested the signal of 88.3 Jia FM and Power 98FM near Bukit Batok, their field strength reading are not high as Mediacorp and SPH radio stations, meanwhile the signal strength of 88.3 Jia FM and Power 98FM are very high near Defense Tower areas.

The transmitter tower of 883 Jia and Power 98FM is located at the top of the building at Defense Technology Tower B. Transmitter power is 12kW for each station, meanwhile when both were transmitted in Bukit Batok, the transmitter power was only 5kW.

So Drama! Entertainment (formerly known as SAFRA Radio) is the smallest radio broadcaster in Singapore. In my opinion, its radio stations 883Jia and Power 98 located the transmitter system at Defense Technology Tower B can save more transmission cost than using Bukit Batok tower where Bukit Batok's telecommunications tower is belonged to SingTel (Singapore's largest telecommunications company because So Drama! Entertainment office is located at Defense Technology Tower B, formerly known as Singapore Telecom). In addition, So Drama! Entertainment broadcast engineers can maintain the transmitter system of 883Jia and Power 98FM at their company tower without relying on SingTel broadcast transmission services.

By creating the chronology of 883Jia and Power 98's transmitter site history, they were launched in 1994/95 and transmitted from Defense Technology Tower B, then they moved to Bukit Batok temporarily, and shifted back to Defense Technology Tower B again.

I personally suspect that 883Jia and Power 98FM moved to Bukit Batok temporarily because the radio transmitter tower at Defense Technology Tower B had problems, but they moved back to Defense Technology Tower B after repairing the transmission tower.

Mediacorp and SPH radio stations' transmission services are provided and maintained by Singtel in Bukit Batok.

(FM DXing) RTM Mutiara FM 93.9MHz (Gunung Jerai), KL FM 97.2MHz and Kedah FM 88.5MHz (Bukit Sungai Kechil) received in Sitiawan, Perak

During Chinese New Year holiday and in conjunction with World Radio Day, my family and I went to Sitiawan to purchase confectionery and enjoy the food there.

I came back to Tua Pek Kung temple again after 2 years hiatus.

On 12th February 2024, a day before World Radio Day, at Tua Pek Kung Chinese temple in Sitiawan, Perak, I managed to tune Mutiara FM 93.9MHz, KL FM 97.2MHz and Kedah FM 88.5MHz, the signal of both radio stations are very weak actually.

At Sitiawan's Tua Pek Kung temple near the sea, Mutiara FM 93.9MHz Gunung Jerai has co-channel interference with Bernama Radio FM 93.9MHz from Kuala Lumpur Tower occasionally, even it has interference with Radio DSB FM 93.8MHz from Deli Serdang, North Sumatra, Indonesia rarely during tropospheric propagation, meanwhile Kedah FM 88.5MHz from Bukit Sungai Kechil has co-channel interference with RTM Nasional FM 88.5MHz from Kuala Lumpur Tower.

KL FM 97.2MHz from Kuala Lumpur Tower has interference with Sinar FM 97.1MHz from Gunung Jerai.

Here are few videos of receiving Mutiara FM 93.9MHz, KL FM 97.2MHz and Kedah FM 88.5MHz in Sitiawan which recorded on 12th February 2024, but I include a video of DXing Mutiara FM 93.9MHz which I filmed at same place 4 years ago.

1. Mutiara FM 93.9MHz Gunung Jerai (182km)

2. Kedah FM 88.5MHz Bukit Sungai Kechil (113km)

3. KL FM 97.2MHz Kuala Lumpur Tower (162km)

Nastra FM 88.6MHz from Langkat, Indonesia received in Teluk Intan, Perak, Malaysia via tropospheric propagation

 After having Chinese New Year eve reunion dinner with my family members at yesterday night, I went back to my late grandmother's house. Initally I would like to perform RDS PS text monitoring of IKIM FM 102.7MHz Gunung Kledang transmitter, but unfortunately I could not capture it. Then, I performed radio frequency scan randomly and I received Nastra FM 88.6MHz from Langkat, Indoneia in Teluk Intan, Perak, Malaysia.

The signal of Nastra FM 88.6MHz was quite clear in Teluk Intan during tropospheric propagation, I was listening to this frequency from 2210 hours to 2300 hours (UTC+8), the signal went weak after 2300 hours. Nastra FM 88.6MHz plays classic Indonesian Dangdut songs, it is based in Pangkalan Susu. Although it targets Langkat Regency in North Sumatra Province, but it overspills to Malaysia territory occasionally during tropospheric propagation.

In my radio DXing history, Nastra FM 88.6MHz from Langkat, Indonesia is the third furthest radio station that I receive in Teluk Intan, Perak, Malaysia as February 2024 after PSU Radio Pattani FM 107.25MHz and MCOT Satun FM 93.25MHz.

As 10th February 2024, Teluk Intan becomes my second location within Malaysia territory of tuning Nastra FM 88.6MHz after Sungai Ayer Tawar in Sabak Bernam District, Selangor where I tuned on 3rd May 2022.

* Frequency: FM 88.6MHz

* Power: unknown

* Transmission site: Pangkalan Susu, Langkat Regency, North Sumatra Province, Indonesia

* Receiving site: Teluk Intan, Perak, Malaysia

* Distance: 308km

* Receiver: TECSUN PL-310ET

* Receiving date/time: 09.02.2024 2208H (UTC+8)

Alongside Nastra FM 88.6MHz, I also received Radio Muslim Al-Fatih FM 107.3MHz from Medan, Indonesia again in Teluk Intan, Perak, Malaysia after 2 years from my last radio reception of this frequency in Teluk Intan, but I tuned it indoor.

RTM Bukit Larut radio stations signal reception in Teluk Intan, Perak.

Here are the 6 RTM radio stations from Bukit Larut (Taiping) received in Teluk Intan, Perak. Each station operates at 250W transmitter power.

1. Radio Klasik FM 103.3MHz

(VIDEO ONLY) RTM Perak FM radio reception in Hulu Perak District

1. Klian Intan (102.9MHz Lawin)

2. West Gerik: R&R Bintang Hijau Sungai Rui (102.9MHz Lawin)

3. East Gerik: Tasik Banding (104.1MHz Bukit Larut)

4. East Gerik: Titiwangsa (104.1MHz Bukit Larut)

Perak FM can be tuned on FM 104.1MHz in East Gerik from Tasik Banding to Titiwangsa while driving from Gerik town to Jeli.

Perak FM's Gerik frequency is 96.2MHz, transmitted from Mempelam Sari, the coverage is only limited for Gerik town. From Gerik to Jeli, the listeners cannot listen to this radio station on FM 96.2MHz after driving more than 15km from the town.

In East Gerik, Tasik Banding, Tasik Temenggor, Air Banun and Titiwangsa, Perak FM can be tuned on 104.1MHz from Bukit Larut while 96.2MHz is not receivable anymore. Alongside FM 104.1MHz, actually Perak FM 102.9MHz Lawin frequency is still available, but the signal is weaker than 104.1MHz.

For FM 102.9MHz, after Tasik Banding while heading to east direction, co-channel interference between Perak FM and Kelantan FM can be detected from Air Banun to Titiwangsa, then FM 102.9MHz will become Kelantan completely at RnR Titiwangsa.

When Perak FM and Kelantan FM are interfering each other on 102.9MHz, the listeners can tune to 104.1MHz clearer, but it starts to have interference with Thailand's Attar Radio FM 104.0MHz from Narathiwat after Titiwangsa when heading to Jeli, Kelantan.

Here are my videos of tuning Perak FM 104.1MHz in East Gerik which I recorded in June 2023.

Cannot search the tuning frequencies of Perak FM in Klian Intan and West Gerik? Listeners are adviced to tune to FM 102.9MHz (Lawin frequency)

Back to June 2023, I went to Hulu Perak for radio DXing convoy in Lenggong, Lawin, Gerik, Pengkalan Hulu, Klian Intan and Titiwangsa.

FM 96.2MHz is the northernmost Perak FM's frequency in Perak state, transmitted from Mempelam Sari for Gerik town, meanwhile no exact coverage of this radio station in Pengkalan Hulu, Klian Intan, and West Gerik, meanwhile Tasik Banding, Tasik Temenggor and Titiwangsa areas can receive partially via FM 104.1MHz from Bukit Larut.

I was already aware of Pengkalan Hulu is the only Perak town where cannot receive Perak FM via frequency transmission, regardless any frequencies such as 96.2MHz Gerik, 102.9MHz Lawin, 94.2MHz Lenggong and 104.1MHz Bukit Larut. So, RTM has to set a transmitter, either in Bukit Palong or Pengkalan Hulu to cover that Perak's northernmost town.

In Klian Intan and West Gerik, Perak FM has no clear frequency, even FM 96.2MHz Gerik frequency is not receivable there, but according to my radio tuning experience, RTM Perak FM is weakly receivable via FM 102.9MHz which is transmitted from Lawin.

Perak FM 102.9MHz is a gap filler transmitter for Lawin where cannot receive 96.2MHz from Gerik, 104.1MHz from Bukit Larut and 94.2MHz from Lenggong, however it can transmit much further than FM 96.2MHz and FM 94.2MHz.

Lawin is a small town located between Gerik and Lenggong.

Cannot search Perak FM's frequencies in Klian Intan and West Gerik (Bintang Hijau) when 96.2MHz is dead? The listeners can try tuning on FM 102.9MHz from Lawin.

When you are driving from Gerik to Baling via Jalan Gerik-Baling, then 96.2MHz becomes unavailable in Kenering. From Kenering to Bintang Hijau Sungai Rui, you can try tuning Perak FM on 102.9MHz.

At Bintang Hijau Sungai Rui rest stop, Perak FM was tuned weakly on 102.9MHz.

In addition, I also filmed two signal videos of Perak FM 102.9MHz in Klian Intan village, one of a video was recorded in front of Klian Intan police station.

== Perak FM radio reception in West Gerik ==

* 96.2MHz Gerik: No signal, but adjacent frequency signal of 988 FM 96.1MHz from Gunung Jerai

* 104.1MHz Bukit Larut: No signal

* 95.6MHz Gunung Kledang: No signal

* 102.9MHz Lawin: Receivable, but weak

* 104.1MHz Bukit Larut: No signal

* 95.6MHz Gunung Kledang: No signal

* 102.9MHz Lawin: Receivable, but weak

Jakarta

Medan

Pekanbaru

Bandung

Surabaya

Pangkalpinang

Palembang

Semarang

Semarang

(Suggestion) Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI) can launch Chinese radio station as PRO-6, broadcast in Mandarin, Hokkien, Cantonese and Hakka.

Currently Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI) has 6 stations in different format such as:

* PRO-1: Regional radio

* PRO-2: Young oriented radio station

* PRO-3: News, current affairs and talk

* PRO-4: Cultural radio stations in several cities

* PRO-5: Music radio stations, available in Makassar and Surabaya

* Voice of Indonesia: External radio station

Chinese is 15th largest ethnicity in Indonesia.

In Indonesia, there are few Chinese radio stations operated by commercial broadcasters, but available in Chinese areas.

Radio Republik Indonesia can launch Chinese radio station as PRO-6 via FM radio platform to target Chinese listeners in several cities such as:

1. Jakarta

2. Medan (North Sumatra province)

3. Pekanbaru (Riau province)

4. Bandung (West Java province)

5. Surabaya (East Java province)

6. Palembang (South Sumatra province)

7. Pangkalpinang (Bangka Belintung Islands province)

8. Semarang (Central Java province)

Broadcast in Chinese Mandarin and the dialects such as Hokkien, Cantonese and Hakka. RRI PRO-6 can air Mandarin program from Voice of Indonesia (VOI) to target Indonesia Chinese.

Same as PRO-3, RRI PRO-6 Chinese radio station broadcasts from Jakarta, and relays in other Chinese cities such as Medan, Pekanbaru, Bandung, Surabaya, Palembang, Pangkalpinang and Semarang by adding local repeaters.

In terms of coverage, Radio Republik Indonesia PRO-6 (Chinese radio station) could be same as PRO-4 and PRO-5 as it does not broadcast in every locations of the country because PRO-6 will focus only the cities where have more Chinese.

==Suggestion of Radio Republik Indonesia RRI PRO-6==

* Format: Chinese radio station

* Language: Mandarin, Hokkien, Hakka, Teochew and Cantonese

* Coverage: Jakarta, Medan, Pekanbaru, Bandung, Surabaya, Palembang, Pangkalpinang and Semarang

* Platform: FM radio frequency transmission and online streaming (for outside broadcast coverage)

* Program includes Voice of Indonesia Mandarin broadcast

FM DX in Batu Arang, Selangor.

Batu Arang is a small town of Rawang, located in Gombak District, Selangor, it is also a heritage town because Batu Arang was a charcoal mining town since British Colonial of Malaya, postcode is 48100.

I came here on 27th January 2024 in the evening before coming to company dinner which held in Subang Jaya at 6.30pm. While my working mates went back home first to take bath, but I took bath at my working place at 3.30pm and departed directly from Puchong by 4.05pm via LDP, ELITE, GUTHRIE and LATAR highways after the working hours, reached Batu Arang at 5.10pm to conduct radio DXing.

Same as Puncak Alam and Bestari Jaya like what I did on 24th December 2023, I made an attempt to receive Raaga's Taiping frequency FM 102.1MHz which transmitted from Bukit Larut in Batu Arang. Unfortunately, no signal from Raaga on FM 102.1MHz was heard in Batu Arang, instead adjacent frequency noise of Pahang FM 102.2MHz Bukit Fraser transmitter heard on FM 102.1MHz.

Forgot about Raaga FM 102.1MHz, I managed to record the distant radio signal of Negeri FM 92.6MHz (Gunung Telapak Buruk), Ai FM 92.1MHz (Gunung Kledang) and Perak FM 95.6MHz (Gunung Kledang) in Batu Arang, Selangor.

RTM Negeri FM 92.6MHz from Gunung Telapak Buruk is still clear in Batu Arang town, Selangor, meanwhile Gunung Kledang transmitted radio stations (Ai FM 92.1MHz and Perak FM 95.6MHz) are extremely weak and having interference with local radio stations (Fly FM 95.8MHz Gunung Ulu Kali and Minnal FM 92.3MHz Kuala Lumpur Tower).

==Radio DXing in Batu Arang, Selangor==

1. Perak FM 95.6MHz Gunung Kledang (151km)

2. Ai FM 92.1MHz Gunung Kledang (151km)

3. Negeri FM 92.6MHz Gunung Telapak Buruk (85km)

1. Perak FM 95.6MHz Gunung Kledang (151km)

2. Ai FM 92.1MHz Gunung Kledang (151km)

3. Negeri FM 92.6MHz Gunung Telapak Buruk (85km)

Unexpected radio DXing in Shah Alam, Selangor, what a coincidence for January 2024.

Early of this month, I had planned to perform radio DXing in Kuala Lipis and Padang Tengku on 21st January 2024 as part of the opening for Radio DX Malaysia Madani 2024, but I cancelled the plan two weeks ago due to health condition, and postponed to March 2024.

Actually there is no radio DXing convoy this month. Few days ago, I was invited to attend an event in Shah Alam which should held on 20th January 2024 and I registered myself in. When I reached there, the event venue was quiet and I was alert that the event seems cancelled due to poor attendance. Coincidentally and also unexpectedly, I performed radio DXing in Shah Alam, Selangor as my replacement and back up activity to substitute the main event.

On Saturday night 20th January 2024, I managed to receive 4 Gunung Ledang transmitted radio stations and 1 semi local radio station from Gunung Telapak Buruk in Shah Alam, Selangor.

Ipoh's Gunung Kledang and Taiping's Bukit Larut radio signals are negative in Shah Alam, Selangor. Hence, Gunung Ledang is the furthest radio transmitter received in Shah Alam with 142km distance.

==Gunung Ledang radio stations DXing in Shah Alam, Selangor==

1. Hot FM 104.3MHz

2. Raaga FM 99.7MHz

3. Melaka FM 102.3MHz

4. Melody FM 107.3MHz

The videos were filmed at Seksyen 13, Shah Alam where located near Federal Highway. Receiving time was between 1845 hours to 1945 hours.

Among 4 Gunung Ledang transmitted radio stations, Melaka FM 102.3MHz was the weakest due to transmitting antenna direction, but I'm unsure of Melaka FM 102.3MHz that I tuned in Shah Alam had co-channel interference with Batam based Indonesia radio station, Hijrah FM or not because 102.3MHz is too weak there.

Negeri FM 92.6MHz from Gunung Telapak Buruk is still clear in Shah Alam, but I classified it as semi local radio station as the tuning distance is only 64km from Gunung Telapak Buruk to Shah Alam.

After completing radio DXing in Shah Alam, and I noted that the event venue was not ON, so I left for light dinner and went home immediately. I did not feel disappointed and angry because I had other back up activities there such as radio DXing and shopping.

Shah Alam already filled the slot of my radio DXing convoy for January 2024 unexpectedly.

RTM plans to relaunch Muzik FM in 2024?

RTM Muzik FM is a now defunct Malay radio station which had ceased broadcast on 31st January 2011, and its frequency slots were replaced by Nasional FM since 1st January 2012 after demerger of Klasik Nasional. This radio station was formerly known as Radio 2, then Radio Muzik.

From 2012 to 2017, Muzik FM was available only via online streaming platform under Galaksi Muzik RTM.

After 12 years hiatus, there are some rumors saying that RTM is planning to relaunch Muzik FM in 2024. RTM Muzik FM Facebook page published some teaser videos with "akan datang" (coming soon).

I'm not sure about the relaunch of Muzik FM will be available on which platforms yet because RTM has two Malay national radio stations:

1. Radio Klasik: Malay classic and retro music

2. Nasional FM: Malay language general radio station

It is very difficult and impossible to relaunch Muzik FM by having new FM radio frequencies because the the frequency spectrum is fully occupied.

To relaunch Muzik FM on radio frequencies platform, restructuring RTM Malay language radio stations is the only way. The best way of bringing back Muzik FM on frequency transmission platform is reverting back RTM radio station lineup between 2006 and 2012 by merging Nasional FM to Radio Klasik and becoming Klasik Nasional, so Muzik FM can come back on its original frequency slots which are now used by Nasional FM.

Cease operation of Nasional FM will cause RTM to lose government service role. If RTM Malay national radio stations (Radio Klasik and Muzik FM) deliver only music entertainment content like commercial radio stations without delivering government's information to the people, RTM will be blamed by government for not delivering the government's messages/propaganda to the people via radio broadcast.

The main role of public or government radio/TV stations is to deliver the government's information to the people. Government's information consists policies, propaganda, emergency events and it is also can counter against the fake news.

Some of us may not like to listen to government's information due to different political ideology, but it depends who is the ruling party.

Re-merging Nasional FM to Radio Klasik frequencies and becoming Klasik Nasional, then reintroducing Muzik FM will be more strategic.

If RTM does not decide to merge Nasional FM and Radio Klasik, then retaining the current lineup, I believe Muzik FM will become digital only radio station. When it comes to digital only radio station, RTM should drop "FM" suffix for Muzik FM, and rename it as Radio Muzik like what it was in 1975.

Radio New Zealand Pacific (formerly known as Radio New Zealand International) can be tuned via SW 13755kHz in part of Malaysia

I have been trying to receive Radio New Zealand International via shortwave frequency in Malaysia for years. Many years ago, I attempted tuning Radio New Zealand International via SW 15720kHz in Malaysia, but signal was negative.

Until 6th January 2024, I successfully received Radio New Zealand International on SW 13755kHz in Balakong, Selangor, Malaysia where it is located 20km south from Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia.

Although the main target of Radio New Zealand International is Pacific areas such as Micronesia, Polynesia and Melanesia, but it can be tuned in part of Malaysia with average signal quality.

The signal reception of Radio New Zealand International SW 13755kHz in Balakong, Selangor, Malaysia is average. It is my first shortwave radio DXing for the year of 2024.

Transmitter site is located in Rangitaiki of North Island of New Zealand, the output power is 100kW, and the angle of antenna azimuth is 35 degree.

Rádio Nacional da Amazônia SW 11780kHz from Brazil is the furhest shortwave radio station tuned in Malaysia.

I break another shortwave radio DXing record in 2024 again by tuning another furthest radio station in Malaysia.

On 16th January 2024, I managed to receive Rádio Nacional da Amazônia on SW 11780kHz from Brazil in Malaysia.

In Malaysia, based on local time (UTC+8), Rádio Nacional da Amazônia broadcasts daily from 1750 hours till 1100 hours, the language is in Portuguese.

I received Rádio Nacional da Amazônia SW 11780kHz in Balakong, Selangor, Malaysia where it is located not far from Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia.

Rádio Nacional da Amazônia SW 11780kHz has adjacent channel interference with 3 China shortwave radio stations and Radio Free Asia which they are on SW 11775kHz. During my radio tuning of Rádio Nacional da Amazônia on SW 11780kHz, I could hear adjacent channel interference of China National Radio CNR-6 SW 11775kHz in the evening, meanwhile adjacent channel interference of Radio Free Asia and China Radio International SW 11775kHz happens in the morning.

When there was adjacent channel interference noise of China National Radio CNR-6 SW 11775kHz when I tuned Rádio Nacional da Amazônia SW 11780kHz, I had to tune adjacently to SW 11785kHz, but audio quality went lower due to adjacent frequency tuning.

In my shortwave radio tuning history, Rádio Nacional da Amazônia SW 11780kHz from Brazil is the furthest shortwave radio tuned in Malaysia with 16432km distance.

Update: e-QSL card from EBC
