The Thailand radio broadcaster MCOT Radio announced to cease its provincial radio station, MCOT Narathiwat FM 96.0MHz on 10th April 2022, and MCOT informed that Narathiwat listeners can follow MCOT Radio broadcast via MCOT Yala FM 102.5MHz and MCOT Pattani FM 91.0MHz in that province.
After 4 months from the date of MCOT Narathiwat FM 96.0MHz ceased its broadcast, there was a radio station taking over the frequency slot FM 96.0MHz.
KCS Radio began trial transmission in Narathiwat on FM 96.0MHz somewhere around in August 2022 and it went on air officially in September 2022.
Technically, KCS Radio takes over former MCOT Narathiwat FM 96.0MHz frequency slot.
Alongside Narathiwat, KCS Radio FM 96.0MHz can be tuned in part of Kelantan, Malaysia. This radio station can be received in several Kelantan areas such as:
1. Kota Bharu
2. Tumpat
3. Pengkalan Chepa
4. Pengkalan Kubor
5. Wakaf Bharu
6. Rantau Panjang
7. Part of Bachok
My friend from Kelantan recorded a video of receiving KCS Radio Narathiwat FM 96.0MHz in Bachok, Kelantan and sent me privately, then I published on my YouTube channel with the credit and courtesy.
Signal reception is moderately clear in Bachok, Kelantan, Malaysia.
About the transmission site, as the propagation is not strong as FM 94.75MHz and Radio Thailand Narathiwat FM 98.25MHz, I may believe KCS Radio FM 96.0MHz is transmitted from either former MCOT Radio Narathiwat tower or all-new site without modifying the transmission power and antenna system parameters.
On last Sunday, I went to Dabong, Kelantan for radio signal monitoring activity to check distant radio stations. I planned the Dabong trip for more than 6 months, then I made it on 23rd October 2022.
Originally I would like to come in November 2021 with Gua Musang trip 4 days 3 nights, but I cancelled as I would like to spend more time in Gua Musang. Then, I carried forward Dabong trip to 2022.
I came to Dabong, but I stayed in Gua Musang for a night by checking in at the same hotel where I was used to stay last year because Gua Musang is the nearest town from Dabong, compare to Kuala Krai. So, Gua Musang became the most strategic location for my Dabong trip.
Thailand radio stations are my target for FM DX in Dabong, Kelantan, Malaysia.
The exact location that I filmed Thailand FM radio stations signal is at KTM Railway Station in Dabong, Kelantan. Total of 10 Thailand radio stations were received in Dabong, Kelantan, Malaysia.
1. Khon Tak Bai Radio FM 88.75MHz from Tak Bai, Thailand (96km)
The most powerful low power Narathiwat radio station so far, FM 88.75MHz based in Tak Bai (nearby Tumpat, Kelantan). Transmission power of Khon Tak Bai Radio FM 88.75MHz is 0.5kW only, interference with Hot FM 88.6MHz from Peringat could be detected at KTM Dabong.
2. Thailand Parliament Radio Station FM 89.0MHz Yala (127km from Khao Pok Yo)
Transmitted from Khao Pok Yo with 2kW power transmitter, signal is moderately weak at KTM Dabong.
3. Radio Thailand Yala FM 92.0MHz (127km from Khao Pok Yo)
Although Radio Thailand Yala FM 92.0MHz operates at 10kW power in Khao Pok Yo as the most powerful radio station from Yala in terms of output transmitter power, but FM 92.0MHz is the weakest Radio Thailand Yala station in Dabong by comparing its signal with FM 94.25MHz and FM 95.0MHz. In Dabong, Radio Thailand Yala FM 92.0MHz has co-channel interference with RTM Kelantan FM 92.0MHz from Bukit Chupak where it covers Gua Musang town only.
I detected the interference between Radio Thailand Yala and Kelantan FM on the frequency FM 92.0MHz at KTM Dabong. In addition, co-channel interference on FM 92.0MHz was also detected on a bridge nearby Sungai Galas when I entered Dabong small town.
4. Radio Thailand Yala FM 94.25MHz (127km)
The clearest Radio Thailand Yala frequency in Dabong, compare with FM 92.0MHz, despite the transmitter power is only 1kW.
5. Voice of Navy 15 FM 94.75MHz Narathiwat (120km)
The clearest Narathiwat based radio station in Dabong with STEREO signal, transmitter power is 1kW. When I attempted tuning Mix FM 94.6MHz from Bukit Panau, no signal was heard, instead adjacent channel interference from this radio station (FM 94.75MHz).
6. Radio Thailand Yala FM 95.0MHz (127km from Khao Pok Yo)
The only Malay language radio station in Thailand is available in Dabong, Kelantan, Malaysia. Reception is slightly poor, but better than FM 92.0MHz, transmitter power is 1kW.
7. Radio Thailand Narathiwat FM 98.25MHz (118km)
The clearest Narathiwat radio station in Dabong, following by FM 94.75MHz, reception is quite clear with STEREO signal, transmission power is 5kW. No interference with RTM Radio Klasik FM 98.3MHz from Gunung Ulu Kali was detected so far.
8. MCOT Yala FM 102.5MHz (127km from Khao Pok Yo)
Same signal quality with Radio Thailand Yala FM 92.0MHz in Dabong, but stable reception. Transmission power is 1kW, transmitted from Khao Pok Yo.
9. Radio Thailand Sungai Golok FM 106.5MHz (72km)
Another clearest Thailand radio station in Dabong, transmitter power is 5kW. It is still clear in Kuala Balah and Kampung Jelawang. Alongside Dabong, Radio Thailand Sungai Golok FM 106.5MHz can be heard until Kampung Meranto and Kampung Pulau Setelu in Gua Musang district, Kelantan.
10. Army Radio FM 107.5MHz Lochut (56km)
The Thailand radio station which interferes Fly FM 107.4MHz coverage in Kota Bharu is partly available in Dabong, but the interference with Fly FM 107.4MHz from Peringat can be heard in Dabong. By comparing the signal between FM 107.4MHz and FM 107.5MHz, Fly FM 107.4MHz signal is clearer than this Thailand radio station FM 107.5MHz.
Possibly FM 107.5MHz is reduced transmission power or modified antenna system due to interference with Fly FM 107.4MHz in Kota Bharu. Hence, Thailand radio station FM 107.5MHz is no longer available in Gua Musang nowadays. In Gua Musang, FM 107.5MHz is now a weak signal of RTM Pahang FM from Gunung Ulu Kali.
Among all 10 Thailand radio stations received in Dabong, with including overall propagation (outside of KTM Dabong), Radio Thailand Sungai Golok FM 106.5MHz is the clearest, following by FM 94.75MHz and FM 98.25MHz.

On top of that, I did try receiving several Thailand radio stations such as KCS Radio FM 96.0MHz Narathiwat, 912 Radio Station FM 99.1MHz Narathiwat, MCOT Radio Pattani FM 91.0MHz and PSU Radio Pattani FM 107.25MHz, but no signal from these radio stations were received in Dabong, Kelantan, Malaysia due to different propagation.
Alongside Dabong, Radio Thailand Sungai Golok FM 106.5MHz signal is still clear in Kampung Jelawang where it is just 8km away from Dabong. Kampung Jelawang is a village located in Kuala Krai district, located not far from Gua Musang district border.
When I was in Dabong to do radio check, the radio stations availability are mostly from Kota Bharu, Machang and Thailand there, however I could receive Minnal FM on the frequency 96.3MHz from Gunung Ulu Kali in Dabong, Kelantan.
Minnal FM can be received in Dabong on 100.9MHz from Bukit Bakar, meanwhile 106.7MHz from RTM Kota Bharu is weak there.
It is unexpected enough that I received Minnal FM 96.3MHz from Gunung Ulu Kali in Dabong while I also received Thailand radio stations signal there.
Mild adjacent channel interference with RTM Nasional FM 96.5MHz from Bukit Bakar was detected in Dabong, Kelantan.
By calculating the transmission distance, RTM Minnal FM 96.3MHz is the furthest radio station tuned in Dabong, Kelantan with the distance as much as 218km from Gunung Ulu Kali.

In Dabong, the clearest frequency to tune to this radio station is 100.9MHz from Bukit Bakar where it is located in Machang (mainly covers Central Kelantan areas such as Machang, Kuala Krai, Tanah Merah, Kota Bharu, and Pasir Mas).
Back to last year in November 2022, I managed to receive BFM 89.9 in Kuala Betis, Kelantan where is just 20km away from Gua Musang town before heading to Cameron Highlands.
Two days ago, I traveled to Dabong in Kelantan, but I stayed a night in Gua Musang at the same hotel as Gua Musang is the nearest town from Dabong, compare to Kuala Krai. My plan included Kuala Balah and Felda Paloh.
Before this, I planned to check any Thailand and Kota Bharu based radio stations propagation in Felda Paloh and Felda Chiku, however there are having no signal to receive Thailand radio stations when I was in Felda Paloh.
Surprisingly, I could receive BFM 89.9 in Felda Paloh, Kelantan where is 50km from Gua Musang town. Signal is weak, but no interference with RTM Radio Klasik FM 89.7MHz from Bukit Chupak because RTM Radio Klasik FM 89.7MHz has no signal in Rantau Manis, Felda Chiku and Felda Paloh.
Felda Paloh is located in East Gua Musang, but I can't imagine how does the Gunung Ulu Kali radio signal transmit there actually.
I recorded two videos of receiving BFM 89.9 in Felda Paloh 2, Gua Musang, Kelantan by using two radio receivers (TECSUN PL-380 and PL-310ET).
BFM 89.9 is transmitted from Gunung Ulu Kali which mainly covers Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, meanwhile it is available in West Pahang, South Perak and part of Negeri Sembilan/Malacca/Johor. From Kuala Lumpur to Kelantan, BFM 89.9 can be tuned up to Kampung Merapoh in Pahang and Kampung Mentara Lama in Gua Musang, Kelantan.
BFM 89.9 has some signal in Kampung Mentara Lama and Kampung Sungai Tupai where are the southernmost locations in Kelantan while I was driving from Gua Musang to Kuala Lumpur.
In Felda Paloh, only RTM Kelantan FM 88.1MHz and Nasional FM 90.7MHz are the available radio stations there as they're transmitted from Felda Paloh 1 (transmission tower can be spotted from Felda Paloh 2 entrance).
Alongside BFM 89.9, I also could receive RTM Pahang FM 107.5MHz from Gunung Ulu Kali in Felda Paloh when I was driving to Gua Musang town.
Over last week, one of my friend who is Melaka based DXer, named Kelvin Lee went to Gemencheh, Negeri Sembilan.
Gemencheh is a small town in Tampin district, located in southeast Negeri Sembilan. It is also located in between Tampin and Gemas. I was used to go there, the small town has nothing special attractive, but I had something to do there which is radio signal monitoring (also known as DXing).
About radio broadcast, Gemencheh is usually covered by Gunung Ledang, meanwhile Gunung Telapak Buruk transmitted radio stations are still available there.
Gunung Pulai transmitted radio stations are also receivable in Gemencheh, but very weak. No signal from Gunung Ulu Kali can be received in Gemencheh.
Unexpectedly, several Singapore radio stations can be tuned in Gemencheh, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia with weak reception. Kelvin Lee had received 4 radio stations from Singapore there such as:
1. BBC World Service FM 88.9MHz
2. Symphony 92.4FM
3. CNA 93.8FM
4. Love 97.2FM
All are transmitted from Bukit Batok, the distance between Bukit Batok and Gemencheh is 196km.
Reception is definitely poor in Gemencheh due to interference with local radio stations (mainly from Gunung Ledang).
Back to 2012, I was also used to receive Singapore FM radio stations in Tampin, Negeri Sembilan, but I did not manage to record the signal because my phone during that time (Sony Ericsson J105i Naite) had no radio recording function which I could record from radio, then it would become audio files. When I was in Tampin, I received:

Di Terengganu, kawasan Kemaman yang tidak boleh menerima siaran Molek FM 93.6MHz dari Kuala Terengganu kini boleh menerima siaran Molek FM pada 100.4MHz dari Kuantan.
Mulai dari 25hb September 2022, pendengar 8FM di Kuantan perlu memuat turun applikasi Audio+ atau mendengar siaran 8FM di strim online kerana frekuensi Kuantan 8FM 100.4MHz akan digantikan oleh Molek FM.
Pelancaran siaran Molek FM di Kuantan dijangka berlaku pada bulan Oktober 2022.
Molek FM dilancarkan pada bulan Januari 2022 di Kota Bharu pada 105.1MHz dan Kuala Terengganu pada 93.6MHz. Sebelum ini, frekuensi sebelum Molek FM digunakan oleh Buletin FM.
Selepas 9 bulan bersiaran, Molek FM bakal mendarat ke Kuantan pada frekuensi FM 100.4MHz dengan mengambil alih slot 8FM (siaran radio bahasa Cina oleh Media Prima Audio).
Saya berasa prestasi rating pendengar 8FM di Kuantan tidak memuaskan, ini menyebabkan 8FM berkorban frekuensi Kuantan dengan menyerahkan slotnya kepada Molek FM.
Frekuensi Molek FM di Kuantan ialah 100.4MHz, dipancar dari Bukit Pelindung. Liputan kawasan ialah:

Bukan seluruh kawasan di Kuantan boleh menerima siaran 8FM pada 88.1MHz dari Gunung Ulu Kali. Selain itu, terdapat juga kawasan Kuantan mengalami gangguan frekuensi oleh Pahang FM 88.0MHz dari Bukit Sembilan dan Nasional FM 88.3MHz dari Bukit Sulai apabila menerima siaran 8FM 88.1MHz dari Gunung Ulu Kali.

Setelah frekuensi 8FM di Kuantan 100.4MHz diganti oleh Molek FM, saya belum tahu lagi sama ada 8FM akan mendapatkan frekuensi baru di Kuantan atau 8FM akan "meninggalkan" pasaran Kuantan, tetapi pendengar 8FM di Kuantan masih mempunyai cara alternatif untuk mendengar siaran tersebut:

I have spotted a post by 8FM on Facebook and Instagram today about the notification of ceasing transmission of 8FM Kuantan frequency.
"From 25th September onwards, listeners need to change the listening method of tuning to 8FM. Immediately download Audio+ app, listen to our voices on 8FM anytime".
"Attention to Kuantan listeners, Kuantan 100.4 wants to change lor!"
By reading the notification post on 8FM Facebook and Instagram page in detail, now I think that 8FM will change its Kuantan frequency, but the time to launch new frequency is unknown yet.
BREAKING NEWS: "8FM is temporarily not having any new Kuantan frequency yet, Kuantan listeners need to tune via Audio+ or online streaming platform." (I received a message reply from 8FM via Instagram)
I think 8FM will get new Kuantan frequency later because I guess that Media Prima broadcast engineer team is on the way changing the transmission equipment of 8FM in Bukit Pelindung. Changing frequency is not easy as what we think because it involves many things, somewhat transmission equipment are needed to be replaced or re-calibrated. (Personal speculation only)
In my opinion, 8FM may change Kuantan frequency because it has co-channel interference with Ai FM 100.4MHz from Gunung Ledang in many areas within East Pahang. In addition, Ai FM 100.4MHz covers large part of Pahang.
Actually I also detect the co-channel interference between Ai FM and 8FM on 100.4MHz in Sri Jaya and some Gambang areas when I drove on LPT highway.
On last month, I went to Chukai, Terengganu from Kuantan, then I did monitor 8FM Kuantan frequency 100.4MHz signal propagation. In between Cherating and Chukai town, 8FM 100.4MHz from Bukit Pelindung was having co-channel interference with Ai FM from Gunung Ledang. Signal became stable again once I reached Chukai town.
It is a problem when 8FM 100.4MHz from Bukit Pelindung is interfered by Ai FM from Gunung Ledang in Cherating, but it is fine if happens in Chini.
Ai FM Gunung Ledang 100.4MHz transmission power is 2kW, meanwhile 8FM Bukit Pelindung 100.4MHz is just only 0.25kW. Under this situation, how does 8FM can encounter and avoid the co-channel interference with Ai FM with such low output power? Somewhat the height of Gunung Ledang is higher than Bukit Pelindung.
Actually this is also a poor frequency planning by MCMC because FM 100.4MHz is not supposedly to be used in Bukit Pelindung as Ai FM uses it in Gunung Ledang which is very powerful. In terms of frequency history, Ai FM uses 100.4 in Gunung Ledang since 1985 when it is 24 years earlier than 8FM (One FM in 2009).
For now, 8FM listeners in Kuantan have to tune via Audio+ app or online streaming platform, but 8FM is receivable on 88.1MHz from Gunung Ulu Kali in few locations.
I recorded the footage of receiving 8FM 88.1MHz in Kuantan was exactly located at Jalan Gambang, video was recorded in Paya Besar. The signal was interfered by Pahang FM 88.0MHz from Bukit Sembilan which covers Muadzam Shah and Bukit Ibam.
Now I'm waiting further update from 8FM. I will report here once I receive the notification.
Latest update (26/09/2022): 8FM Kuantan frequency 100.4MHz is to be replaced by Molek FM somewhere in October 2022.
European invented radio technology as a replacement of analogue FM and AM radio, DAB+ (Digital Audio Broadcasting) is successful in Western Europe such as United Kingdom, Norway, France, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Spain and Switzerland.
However, DAB+ radio is also a failure radio technology in several countries such as Hong Kong, Singapore, Romania, Hungary, Portugal and Ireland.
There are few reasons of DAB+ is unsuccessful in these countries actually.
1. Lack of interest and commitment from radio broadcaster
- Many radio listeners are tuning on FM radio platform, the radio stations gain more listenership ratings on FM radio than DAB+. Some of radio stations also run trial transmission on DAB/DAB+ radio by simulcasting FM radio program, but listeners prefer to listen on FM radio.
- Despite the broadcast regulator promotes DAB+ to radio players, but they have no interest towards that digital radio technology with many reasons such as coverage issue, transmission costs and the listeners.
2. Lack of public awareness towards DAB+ radio broadcast
- Some of countries perform trial transmission of DAB+ radio, but the government does not promote this radio technology to the public. Hence, the people don't aware about DAB+ radio.
3. High transmission costs are paid by the radio broadcasters.
- As the coverage of DAB+ radio is smaller than FM radio due to DAB+ is on VHF Band III which is higher than FM radio (VHF Band II), radio broadcasters have to launch more gap filler transmitter to cover the location. The radio broadcasters have to bear more transmission costs on DAB+ radio than FM radio.
- Example: If Astro Radio from Malaysia launches DAB+ in Selangor, the radio broadcaster has to launch few auxiliary transmitter sites in Bukit Sungai Besi and Menara Kuala Lumpur. So, Astro Radio has to bear 3 times of transmission fees for DAB+ radio than FM radio. Compare between FM and DAB+, in Selangor, radio broadcasters can use only Gunung Ulu Kali to cover whole state.
4. DAB+ radio receiver is not affordable to the consumer
- At any electronic shop, by comparing the price of FM and DAB+ radio receiver, the price of DAB+ radio receiver is more expensive than FM radio receiver. Some of consumers can't afford the price to purchase DAB+ radio receiver.
- Note that DAB+ radio receiver consumes more electricity power than FM.
5. Car radio does not have DAB+ tuner
- Most of the car audio player don't have DAB+ tuner. The latest car multimedia player aren't only equipped with FM radio, Bluetooth and USB port as the most basic features, they are even having Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. With such advanced features, people can even tune to their content (including online radio stations) via mobile data by connecting the phone to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, even Bluetooth and the conventional AUX port. So, DAB+ technology is not welcomed by car users.
6. Lack of listeners' interest
- As there is growing of digital platforms from the radio broadcasters such as Podcasts, YouTube LIVE streaming and mobile applications, it is very convenient to the consumers. People can tune to their favorite radio stations via online streaming, YouTube, mobile app and even repeated program through podcast, they don't need to buy DAB+ radio receiver which is more expensive.
7. Poorer coverage of DAB+ than FM
- As DAB+ frequency is allocated at VHF Band III which is higher than FM radio band, the coverage of DAB+ is lesser than FM.
- Usually FM radio transmission can travel up to 150km (depends on the transmission site), but DAB+ transmission distance is shorter than FM.
- The listeners tune to a radio station on FM band outside broadcast coverage areas, when the signal is weak and faded, they can still hear the broadcast with static noise on FM frequency. However, on DAB+, when the signal is weak, the DAB+ signal is directly off and showing "NO Signal", the situation is same as playing a damaged CD on the player.
==About DAB+ Radio in Malaysia==
- According to WorldDAB, Malaysia has been running DAB+ radio trial transmission since 2009. Coverage is limited in Kuala Lumpur.
- Opinion: I don't think DAB+ is successful radio technology in Malaysia because the people have no interest to listen to radio via DAB+ as we are already accustomed to listen through FM radio and other digital platform such as mobile app streaming, YouTube LIVE and online streaming. In addition, none of the Malaysia cars' multimedia players have DAB+ tuner, even I go to any electronic shop, there are no any DAB+ receiver. Moreover, I don't think Malaysia radio broadcasters have the interest to operate DAB+ broadcast to replace FM radio due to poorer coverage of DAB+ than FM. Malaysia can be same with Romania, Hungary, Portugal, Singapore, Hong Kong and Ireland where DAB+ is abandoned.
The RTM's Orang Asli language radio station, Asyik FM launched North Johor frequency on FM 95.6MHz from Gunung Ledang since January 2011.
According to RTM engineer, Asyik FM 95.6MHz Gunung Ledang transmitter only intends to Orang Asli areas in Segamat, Chaah and Labis.
Asyik FM 95.6MHz Gunung Ledang is receivable in small part of Negeri Sembilan (Rompin and Gemencheh) and Pahang (Muadzam Shah and Keratong) actually with weak signal quality.
Transmission power of Asyik FM 95.6MHz in Gunung Ledang is 0.25kW, likely a directional panel antenna beams only southeast direction to aim Chaah and Labis.
In Pahang state, Asyik FM is available largely on FM 102.5MHz from Gunung Ulu Kali, only two locations can receive on FM 95.6MHz from Gunung Ledang, so I tested in Muadzam Shah, and Keratong.
==Muadzam Shah==
FM 95.6MHz reception is fair in Bandar Muadzam Shah, but signal is unstable due to interference with Pahang FM 95.5MHz from Bukit Sulai, but Asyik FM is even clearer in Muadzam Shah on FM 102.5MHz from Gunung Ulu Kali when I compare with FM 95.6MHz.
95.6MHz Gunung Ledang: 52/100
102.5MHz Gunung Ulu Kali: 67/100
==Keratong==
No interference with Pahang FM 95.5MHz from Bukit Sulai like what I received in Muadzam Shah, but poor reception tuned in Keratong.
FM 102.5MHz from Gunung Ulu Kali reception is slightly clearer there.
Overall check, Keratong and Muadzam Shah are not the broadcast license areas of Asyik FM 95.6MHz from Gunung Ledang in terms of reception quality. Listeners in these locations need to tune it on FM 102.5MHz from Gunung Ulu Kali. Only Felda Selancar nearby Johor border is the coverage of FM 95.6MHz.
