Malaysia, Singapore and Batam FM radio stations reception in Tanjungpinang, Bintan Island of Riau Islands Province, Indonesia

From 28th to 30th June 2026, I spend days in Tanjungpinang for my very first ever radio DXpedition activity in Indonesia. Tanjungpinang is a city located in Bintan Island, it is the capital of Riau Island Province in Indonesia.

As Tanjungpinang is the capital of Riau Island Province in Indonesia, but nobody has done any radio signal monitoring there, so I decide to take this task.

I visited Tanjungpinang, Indonesia by ferry, departing from Johor Bahru at 3.45pm (UTC+8), it takes about 3 hours 30 minutes to travel from Stulang Laut Jetty to Sri Bintan Pura Terminal.

When I reached there, the first agenda was to check in the hotel because I arrived in Tanjungpinang at 6.45pm (West Indonesia time UTC+7), then I took a dinner.

After completing this task, the second agenda was to conduct preliminary radio signal check in Tanjungpinang city center at Jl. Merdeka. At Jl. Merdeka, zero signal of Singapore and Malaysia radio stations were heard. Then, I walked to Gong Gong Building (Indonesian: Gedung Gong Gong) at Jl.Hang Tuah to conduct further radio signal monitoring activity. Initially, there were zero signals of Singapore and Malaysia radio stations in the vicinity of Gong Gong Building, but I tried to go upstairs and tuned them. I had captured weak signal of Singapore and Malaysia radio stations.

During the first day at Gong Gong Building, I could only receive two Malaysia radio stations Traxx FM 102.9MHz and Johor FM 101.9MHz, meanwhile the rest stations were zero signal. Next, I tried it again on second day by going to Gong Gong Building again in the morning, I started to receive more Malaysia radio stations signal.

Singapore radio stations were tuned weakly at Gong Gong Building. Due to copyright restriction where some of the radio stations were playing non-stop music on Sunday night, I couldn't record the videos of several radio stations, so I carried forward on second day.

Malaysia radio stations are transmitted from Gunung Pulai which mainly covers South Johor and Singapore.

Singapore radio stations are transmitted from Bukit Batok.

Here are the videos of Malaysia, Singapore, and Batam radio stations received weakly in Tanjungpinang, Indonesia.

All videos are recorded at Gong Gong Building in Kota Tanjungpinang, Indonesia, but no signal when I tuned any Singapore and Malaysia radio stations at Jl. Merdeka in Tanjungpinang.

==NOTES==

1. Suria FM 101.4MHz from Gunung Pulai is not receivable in Tanjungpinang, Indonesia due to RRI Tanjungpinang PRO-4 FM 101.3MHz.

2. Melody FM 98.4MHz from Gunung Pulai is not receivable in Tanjungpinang due to RRI Tanjungpinang PRO-1 FM 98.3MHz.

3. Kiss 92FM is the only Singapore radio station unavailable in Tanjungpinang due to RRI Tanjungpinang PRO-2 FM 92.1MHz.

4. Zayan FM 92.8MHz, IKIM FM 106.2MHz, Hitz FM 97.6MHz and Best FM 104.1MHz from Gunung Pulai are zero signal in Tanjungpinang.

5. RTM Minnal FM 101.1MHz from Gunung Pulai has no signal in Tanjungpinang, Indonesia, instead adjacent channel interference noise of RRI Tanjungpinang PRO-4 FM 101.3MHz.

In conclusion, Singapore, Malaysia and Batam radio stations are mostly zero signals in most of Tanjungpinang City, Indonesia, but Gong Gong Building area is the only best location to capture the radio signal from Singapore, Malaysia and Batam radio stations, but weak signal reception. Batam Island is the best location of Riau Islands Province in Indonesia to tune Singapore and Malaysia FM radio stations loudly and clearly, while Tanjungpinang in Bintan Island is the distant coverage of Singapore, Batam and Malaysia FM radio stations.

A movie version of Malaysia, Singapore and Batam radio stations signal monitoring video in Tanjungpinang, Indonesia is released today with 36 minutes and 32 seconds duration.

Gunung Ledang transmitted Malaysia radio stations tuned in Jambi, Indonesia via tropospherc propagation

After receiving the radio stations signal from Singapore and Gunung Pulai, Malaysia, Limra DX also managed to receive few Malaysia FM radio stations from Gunung Ledang in Jambi City, Indonesia, he tuned Kool FM 88.1MHz, IKIM FM 89.5MHz and 988 FM 98.2MHz.

Kool FM 88.1MHz is the strongest Gunung Ledang transmitted Malaysia radio stations in Jambi City, Jambi Province, Indonesia, but IKIM FM 89.5MHz is the weakest station there.

988 FM 98.2MHz has adjacent channel interference with Jambi local radio station Diaz FM 98.4MHz in Jambi City, Indonesia due to 200kHz frequency separation.

The distance between Gunung Ledang and Jambi City, Indonesia is 454km. Same as Gunung Pulai and Singapore radio stations, the Malaysia radio stations from Gunung Ledang in Jambi City, Indonesia are also tropospheric propagation.

Malaysia (Gunung Pulai) radio stations tuned in Jambi, Indonesia via tropospheric propagation

In previous article, I have shared about Singapore radio stations reception in Jambi, Indonesia. Generally, Malaysia radio stations from Gunung Pulai (Johor Bahru) are also available in Singapore, then Riau Islands Province of Indonesia such as Batam, Bintan and Karimun, but Gunung Pulai transmitted Malaysia radio stations are also received in Jambi City, the capital of Jambi Province, Indonesia by Limra DX.

Limra DX has managed to tune Hot FM 90.1MHz and Sinar FM 87.8MHz in Jambi City, Indonesia today, videos are recorded at Gentala Arasy Pedestrian Bridge in Jambi.

Compare between both radio stations, Sinar FM 87.8MHz is loud and clear there, but Hot FM 90.1MHz is very weak. According to the video description by Limra DX, both Malaysia radio stations are also tropospheric propagation.

The receiving distance between Gunung Pulai and Jambi City in Indonesia is 355km. Same as Singapore radio stations, Jambi City is also the furthest location in Indonesia to receive Malaysia radio stations from Gunung Pulai.

Excellent radio reception by Limra DX in Jambi, Indonesia. Well-done!

(UPDATE 27/6/2026 7:30AM) Hitz FM 97.6MHz, RTM Nasional FM 105.7MHz, Radio Klasik FM 106.7MHz are tuned in Jambi, Indonesia with super weak signal.

(UPDATE 27/6/2026 5PM) 988 FM 99.9MHz, RTM Traxx FM 102.9MHz are tuned in Jambi, Indonesia with super weak signal.

Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) will relaunch its radio stations on Astro platform in the near future by continuing collaboration with Astro, it is highly recommended to launch Wai FM Bidayuh/Radio Kayan on Astro to reach more Kayan community in rural areas.

In January 2026, Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) had ceased all of its radio stations from Astro platform, it involved Nasional FM, Traxx FM, Ai FM, Minnal FM, Asyik FM, Sabah VFM and Wai FM.

Last month, RTM announced to cease broadcast of its TV channels from Astro on 1st July 2026, however RTM makes an U-turn by continuing the partnership with Astro to expand broadcast reach after the contract renewal.

This means that RTM TV1, TV2 and TVOkey will continue their TV broadcast on Astro platform, but RTM will launch Sukan+ (sports channel) and Berita RTM (news channel) on Astro platform. (Personally RTM can also launch its classic channel TV6 on Astro if there is demand from the public)

Its radio stations will be also relaunched on Astro in the near future.

In my opinion, alongside Nasional FM, Traxx FM, Ai FM, Minnal FM, Asyik FM, Sabah VFM and Wai FM, RTM should launch Wai FM Bidayuh/Radio Kayan on Astro too.

If Wai FM Bidayuh/Radio Kayan is launched on Astro, I strongly suggest RTM to realign its program schedule of Wai FM by slotting Talidio Kenyah from 3pm to 6pm, while Radio Kayan is aired on Astro via Wai FM Bidayuh from 12pm to 6pm.

With this suggestion, Radio Kayan and Wai FM Bidayuh can reach more listeners via Astro, especially locations outside the coverage of FM transmitters (such as Sungai Asap and Ulu Baram). In addition, Talidio Kenyah can be tuned on Astro from 3pm to 6pm, so Kenyah listeners can tune Talidio Kenyah via Astro without using Facebook LIVE and YouTube LIVE where social media LIVE streaming are not ideal in rural areas due to internet coverage limitation.

In Belaga, despite Wai FM is available via Sibu FM 103.0MHz, but Sibu FM broadcasts in Iban by relaying programs from Kuching, alongside 3 hours Malay language local program. Sibu FM doesn't carry any program from Radio Kayan and Talidio Kenyah. Hence, Wai FM Bidayuh/Radio Kayan is needed on Astro satellite platform in order to reach Kayan community in Belaga, even Sungai Asap and Ulu Baram.

Both Radio Kayan and Talidio Kenyah don't have to struggle in expanding broadcasting hours on Astro and MYTV platform when RTM launches Wai FM Bidayuh on Astro.

==Suggestion of realigning Wai FM on Astro==

* Wai FM Channel 1 (Iban + Lun Bawang + Kenyah)

* Wai FM Channel 2 (Bidayuh + Kayan)

Wai FM Channel 1:

* 0000-1200 hours: Iban

* 1200-1500 hours: Lun Bawang (Limbang FM)

* 1500-1800 hours: Kenyah (Miri FM)

* 1800-0000 hours: Iban

Wai FM Channel 2:

* 0000-1200 hours: Bidayuh

* 1200-1800 hours: Kayan

* 1800-0000 hours: Bidayuh

Hopefully RTM will launch Wai FM Bidayuh/Radio Kayan on Astro platform in the near future, together with relaunching of Nasional FM, Traxx FM, Ai FM, Minnal FM, Asyik FM, Sabah VFM and Wai FM (Iban + Lun Bawang + Kenyah).

RTM Johor FM 92.1MHz (Bukit Tinggi) & 101.9MHz (Gunung Pulai) tuned in Tamparuli, Sabah by Kisah Alkisah at the first time, but Sporadic E propagation.

In February and June 2026, the Sabah radio DXer, Kisah Alkisah had successfully received the radio signal of RTM Johor FM on 92.1MHz and 101.9MHz in Tamparuli, Sabah, both frequencies are Sporadic E signal.

Tamparuli is a small town located in Tuaran District, West Coast Division, Sabah, it is 39km from Kota Kinabalu City.

RTM Johor FM 92.1MHz is transmitted from Bukit Tinggi for Mersing, Kahang, Jemaluang and Endau, meanwhile 101.9MHz is transmitted from Gunung Pulai for Central-South Johor (Johor Bahru, Pontian, Kota Tinggi, Kulaijaya, Kluang and Southern Batu Pahat), Singapore and Riau Islands Indonesia (eg: Batam, Bintan, Karimun).

Sporadic E radio propagation is only happened for a short while, the signal goes disappeared after Sporadic E propagation season ends.

Here are two videos of tuning RTM Johor FM in Tamparuli, Sabah by Kisah Alkisah via Sporadic E propagation.

1. FM 92.1MHz Bukit Tinggi 1kW (1461km)

2. FM 101.9MHz Gunung Pulai 2kW (1498km)

Both are moderately weak in Tamparuli, Sabah, but their signal propagation don't hold for long duration.

For FM 92.1MHz, despite it is just 200kHz from RTM Ai FM 91.9MHz from Lawa Mandau transmitter which covers Tamparuli too, but no adjacent channel interference noise from RTM Ai FM 91.9MHz is heard when tuned RTM Johor FM 92.1MHz in Tamparuli.

As none of local radio station is using the frequency near 101.9MHz such as 101.8MHz and 102.0MHz, RTM Johor FM 101.9MHz is tuned in Tamparuli without having any interference noise, but during Sporadic E propagation season, it has adjacent channel interference from Indonesia radio station on FM 102.0MHz.

During normal radio propagation, FM 101.9MHz is empty frequency in Tamparuli, Sabah, meanwhile FM 92.1MHz is weak radio signal from RTM Nasional FM Bukit Trig transmitter occasionally, otherwise simply adjacent channel noise of RTM Ai FM 91.9MHz Lawa Mandau transmitter.

RTM Nasional FM 92.1MHz covers Sandakan mainly, but it can be detected weakly in Tamparuli, Kundasang and Tuaran.

Congratulations to Kisah Alkisah for successfully receiving RTM Johor FM 92.1MHz and 101.9MHz in Tamparuli, Sabah via Sporadic E propagation.

Sporadic E FM DX in Tamparuli, Sabah, Malaysia - PART 8: Peninsular Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore radio stations by Kisah Alkisah

12. FM 102.0MHz Indonesia (likely RRI Bogor PRO-1, 1762km)

* Frekuensi: FM 101.9MHz
* Kuasa pemancar: 2kW
* Tempat pemancar: Gunung Pulai, Johor
* Tempat penerima: Tamparuli, Sabah
* Jarak: 1498km
* Jenis pemancaran: Sporadik-E

Rádio Nacional da Amazônia SW 11780kHz from Brazil radio reception in Malaysia (compilation)

2 years and 5 months ago, I successfully received a Brazil shortwave radio station in Malaysia, known as Rádio Nacional da Amazônia on SW 11780kHz.

From January to March 2024, I recorded 3 videos of tuning Rádio Nacional da Amazônia SW 11780kHz in two locations of Malaysia.

1. Balakong, Selangor (16432km)

2. Teluk Intan, Perak (16404km)

The video of receiving Rádio Nacional da Amazônia SW 11780kHz in Teluk Intan was recorded on 12th February 2024 during Chinese New Year holiday in Malaysia.

Rádio Nacional da Amazônia SW 11780kHz is transmitted from Brasilia, Brazil.

By calculating the receiving distance, Rádio Nacional da Amazônia SW 11780kHz is still the furthest shortwave radio station received in Malaysia, regardless Balakong or Teluk Intan.

RTM Nasional FM SW 15295kHz received in Brazil by Uender Marques

In March 2026, Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) relaunched two shortwave radio stations transmission, SW 15295kHz (Nasional FM) and SW 11885kHz (Sabah VFM).

For Sabah VFM  SW 11885kHz, the main intended coverage is Sabah rural areas in East Malaysia region, meanwhile Nasional FM SW 15295kHz mainly targets entire Malaysia with non-directional antenna at 10kW.

In the past years, I had seen several radio DXers from Latin America countries tuning Wai FM SW 11665kHz and Sarawak FM SW 9835kHz in Brazil, Uruguay, Ecuador and Mexico.

Recently, RTM shortwave radio station was received again in Brazil on SW 15295kHz which carries the program from Nasional FM.

Based on the information from Uender Marques, the Brazilian radio DXer, RTM Nasional FM SW 15295kHz was tuned in Unai, Minas Gerais state, Brazil.

Unai is located 164km from Brasilia, the capital city of Brazil.

The radio reception of Nasional FM SW 15295kHz in Brazil is average, but stable.

==Radio reception of RTM Nasional FM SW 15295kHz in Brazil==

* Frequency: SW 15295kHz

* Power: 10kW

* Transmitter site: RTM Kajang, Selangor state, Malaysia

* Receiving site: Unai, Minas Gerais, Brazil (164km from Brasilia)

* Distance: 15798km

* Receiving date/time: 30th May 2026 1108 hours (UTC)/1908 hours (UTC+8 Malaysia time)/0808 hours (UTC-3 Brasilia time)

Parabéns! Congratulations to Uender Marques for successfully receiving RTM Nasional FM shortwave frequency SW 15295kHz in Brazil.

Alongside RTM Nasional FM, I also expect that Sabah VFM SW 11885kHz can be received in Brazil and other Latin America countries like Peru, Colombia, Chile, Mexico (west), Panama, Ecuador, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Uruguay and Bolivia.

The broadcast hours of both RTM shortwave radio stations are from 0000 hours to 1200 hours (UTC) everyday.

Thailand FM radio stations reception in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, Malaysia (31.05.2026 edition)

During my short stay in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, Malaysia last week, I randomly recorded several Thailand radio stations.

Here are the videos of tuning Thailand FM radio stations in Kota Bharu, Kelantan where I recorded randomly.

1. Radio Thailand Yala FM 92.0MHz

2. Radio Thailand Yala FM 95.0MHz

3. Thailand Parliament Radio FM 89.0MHz (Yala)

4. KCS Radio FM 96.0MHz Narathiwat

Radio Thailand Yala FM 92.0MHz is the loudest and clearest Thailand radio station in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, Malaysia because it operates at 10kW transmitter power in Khao Pok Yo.

KCS Radio FM 96.0MHz Narathiwat is moderately weak in Kota Bharu, it was formerly carried by MCOT Narathiwat until April 2022.

In Kota Bharu, there are other Thailand radio stations available too, such as:

* Radio Thailand Yala FM 94.25MHz

* Radio Thailand Narathiwat FM 98.25MHz

* Radio Thailand Sungai Golok FM 106.5MHz

* Voice of Navy FM 94.75MHz Narathiwat

* MCOT Yala FM 102.5MHz

* FM 99.1MHz Narathiwat (weak)

Compilation of RTM Johor FM 101.9MHz Gunung Pulai transmitter radio reception in North Johor with 100kHz adjacent channel interference from MY FM 101.8MHz Gunung Ulu Kali transmitter

Here are the compilation videos of RTM Johor FM 101.9MHz (TX_Gunung Pulai) radio reception in North Johor with 100kHz adjacent channel interference from MY FM 101.8MHz (TX_Gunung Ulu Kali).

The videos were recorded in various locations of Segamat District as part of my frequency study regarding FM 102.0MHz Gunung Telapak Buruk radio transmission.

1. Batu Anam

2. Segamat

3. Labis

Through these videos, it is already sufficient when Johor FM 101.9MHz has adjacent channel interference with MY FM 101.8MHz in Segamat District, Johor. Therefore, FM 102.0MHz cannot be used for Gunung Telapak Buruk radio transmission, regardless low or high transmitter power.
