Kuala Rompin is the only location in Pahang state, Malaysia where I can tune to some Singapore radio stations via FM frequency transmission on the radio receiver.

Generally we know that Singapore radio stations can be tuned in South Johor of Malaysia (such as Johor Bahru, Kota Tinggi, Kluang, and Pontian), even weak signal can be received in North Johor and part of Melaka.

Unexpectedly I could receive several Singapore radio stations in Kuala Rompin where is located in Pahang state. Kuala Rompin is located in Southeast Pahang, beside Endau in Johor, and also opposite of Tioman Island.

Most of Singapore radio stations that I tuned in Kuala Rompin were operated by Mediacorp, meanwhile there is 1 radio station operated by Singapore Press Holdings SPH Media Trust. In Kuala Rompin, I had received about 7 Singapore radio stations via FM radio platform. These 7 Singapore radio stations were tested in Kuala Rompin town (excluding Tanjung Gemuk).

 

1. SPH Media Trust One FM 91.3MHz (TX Power: 12kW)

 

The only SPH radio station which I could hear weakly in Kuala Rompin, Pahang, the exact location is in Kampung Deraman. No signal is heard when I received in the exact Kuala Rompin town.

No signal from its sister radio stations such as Money FM 89.3MHz, and Hao FM 96.3MHz are received in Kuala Rompin, Pahang, Malaysia.

 

2. Mediacorp Symphony 92.4FM (TX Power: 10kW)

Signal was quite loud when I tuned nearby Pantai Hiburan, but co-channel interference with Hot FM Kuantan frequency FM 92.4MHz is detected when I listened to Symphony 92.4MHz in Kuala Rompin town, Pahang.

 

3. Mediacorp YES 93.3FM (TX Power: 6kW)

Same receiving location as Symphony 92.4FM, but it has minor adjacent channel interference with Hitz FM Kuantan frequency 93.2MHz from Bukit Pelindung. However, FM 93.3MHz is weak signal of 988 FM from Gunung Telapak Buruk when receive in Kuala Rompin town.

 

4. Mediacorp Class 95FM (TX Power: 6kW)

Adjacent channel interference with Manis FM 95.1MHz from Bukit Pelindung, Kuantan. In most of the areas in Kuala Rompin, Class 95FM is having co-channel interference with Hitz FM 95.0MHz from Gunung Telapak Buruk which same phenomena like Muar.

 

5. Mediacorp Oli 96.8FM (TX Power: 10kW)

In Kuala Rompin, there are 2 Malaysia Tamil radio stations are available. Minnal FM is the clearest Tamil radio station as it is transmitted from Bukit Tinggi, Johor on the frequency FM 88.3MHz, meanwhile Raaga can be tuned weakly in Kuala Rompin on either FM 99.3MHz from Gunung Ulu Kali or FM 99.7MHz from Gunung Ledang.

Alongside Raaga and Minnal FM, Singapore Mediacorp's Tamil radio station Oli 96.8FM can be received in Kuala Rompin, but signal is pretty unstable and having interference. The radio signal of Oli 96.8FM is not consistently available in Kuala Rompin as it is having adjacent channel interference with Sinar FM 96.9MHz from Gunung Telapak Buruk.

In addition, Oli 96.8FM is also having co-channel interference with RTM Pahang FM 96.8MHz from Tioman Island. Overall check, Oli 96.8FM from Singapore and RTM Pahang FM 96.8MHz from Tioman Island are constantly having interference with Sinar FM 96.9MHz Negeri Sembilan frequency from Gunung Telapak Buruk in Kuala Rompin, Endau and Tanjung Gemuk.

6. Mediacorp Love 97.2FM (TX Power: 6kW)

The clearest Singapore radio station in Kuala Rompin ever, compare with other 6 samples. It is available from Kuala Rompin to Endau. 

I ran the distant radio signal monitoring of Love 97.2FM in two different locations. First, it is in the town. Second, it is in Tanjung Gemuk where is 24km from Kuala Rompin town, also just next to Johor border.

 

Co-channel interference with Sinar FM Kuantan frequency 97.2MHz from Bukit Pelindung in Kuala Rompin is less serious than FM 92.4MHz.

 

7. Mediacorp 987FM (TX Power: 6kW)

While I was driving from Kuala Rompin town, southbound to Endau, Johor, my car radio receiver frequency automatic scan suddenly stopped at FM 98.7MHz when I pressed previous button on my radio dial from FM 99.7MHz to other lower frequency.

So, I had identified the frequency FM 98.7MHz that I tuned in Kuala Rompin was actually Mediacorp 987FM. After for a while, it began having adjacent channel interference with Fly FM 98.6MHz from Gunung Telapak Buruk, but the interference was not so serious.

Reception signal was quite clear when I tuned to 987FM there.

All Singapore radio stations are transmitted from Bukit Batok, the adjacent transmission distance from Bukit Batok to Kuala Rompin is between 161km to 169km, meanwhile Bukit Batok adjacent distance to Tanjung Gemuk is about 147km. 

Tested radio stations are received in two radio receivers such as Perodua Axia SE 2014 Betamek radio player, and TECSUN PL-380.

 

Meanwhile, no signal can be detected in Kuala Rompin when I tuned to other Singapore radio stations such as 88.3 Jia FM, BBC World Service 88.9FM, Money FM 89.3MHz, Ria 89.7FM, Gold 90.5FM, Kiss 92FM, CNA 93.8FM, Capital 95.8FM, 96.3 Hao FM, Power 98FM, and UFM 100.3, but I almost received Warna 94.2FM from Singapore, unfortunately the signal was gone quickly and the frequency became Mix FM 94.2MHz from Gunung Telapak Buruk.

4) Ria 89.7FM: Weak signal of Ai FM 89.7MHz from Gunung Telapak Buruk, also adjacent signal of IKIM FM 89.6MHz from Bukit Pelindung

5) Gold 90.5FM: Weak signal of Minnal FM 90.5MHz from Gunung Telapak Buruk

6) Kiss 92FM: The frequency is totally the adjacent signal of RTM Pahang FM 91.9MHz local transmitter and Johor FM 92.1MHz from Bukit Tinggi.

7) CNA 93.8FM: The frequency is totally the adjacent signal of RTM Radio Klasik FM 93.7MHz local transmitter

8) Capital 95.8FM: No signal, but weak and mild signal of Fly FM 95.8MHz from Gunung Ulu Kali

9) Hao FM 96.3: Weak signal of Minnal FM 96.3MHz from Gunung Ulu Kali

10) Power 98FM: Weak signal of Era FM 98.0MHz from Bukit Pelindung

11) UFM 100.3: Adjacent signal of Ai FM 100.4MHz from Gunung Ledang

 

Meanwhile none of people are installing high rise UHF antenna in Kuala Rompin to receive Singapore TV stations (regardless analogue or digital). 

 

In conclusion, by conducting FM DXing, Kuala Rompin is the only Pahang location where I can receive some Singapore radio stations via frequency transmission on my radio receivers. 

RTM Johor FM boleh diterima di negeri Pahang (Rompin, Pulau Tioman, Pekan dan sebahagian kecil Kuantan) pada frekuensi FM 92.1MHz dari Bukit Tinggi (Johor Timur)

  

Siaran RTM Johor FM bukan sahaja boleh diikuti di Melaka Selatan (Jasin, Asahan, Bemban, Merlimau), Negeri Sembilan Selatan (Gemas, Gemencheh, Jempol, Tampin) dan Barat Daya Pahang (Keratong, Muadzam Shah) dengan melalui frekuensi FM 105.3MHz dari Gunung Ledang, tetapi Johor FM boleh diterima siarannya di Pahang Timur pada frekuensi FM 92.1MHz yang dipancar dari Bukit Tinggi (Johor Timur).

 

Johor FM 92.1MHz boleh diterima di:

1. Pekan (138km)

2. Nenasi

3. Kuala Rompin (61km)

4. Tanjung Gemuk

5. Sebahagian kecil Kuantan (173km)

6. Gambang (172km)

 

Di Pahang Timur, Johor FM 92.1MHz boleh diterima dengan jelas dari Bandar Pekan sehingga sempadan negeri Johor (Tanjung Gemuk), tetapi terdapat kawasan di Pekan mungkin mengalami gangguan frekuensi bersebelahan dengan Lite FM 92.2MHz dari Gunung Ledang, cuma gangguan antara Johor FM dan Lite FM adalah minima.

Manakala di kawasan Kuala Rompin, siaran Johor FM 92.1MHz masih boleh diikuti dengan jelas, walaupun ia mempunyai jarak frekuensi 200kHz dengan Pahang FM 91.9MHz Kuala Rompin. Isyarat semakin jelas apabila menerima siaran Johor FM 92.1MHz di Tanjung Gemuk.

 

Isyarat sangat lemah diterima di Kuantan dan Gambang.

About RTM, there are several state and district radio stations where are also available internationally through overspill signal because they are located not so far from neighboring countries border. In addition, for non-international border region, some of RTM state radio stations can be heard even further. Here are the listed RTM state and district radio stations where are available in neighboring countries of Malaysia.

 

1. Johor FM

As Johor is located next to Singapore, RTM Johor FM is also available in Singapore, even Indonesia (Batam, Karimun and Bintan) via 101.9MHz from Gunung Pulai.

 

2. Kedah FM

Kedah FM is actually available internationally in Thailand by following locations below with the frequencies.

- Satun via FM 105.7MHz from Gunung Raya

- Sadao and Dannok via FM 97.5MHz from Gunung Jerai

- Betong via FM 90.5MHz from Bukit Palong

3. Langkawi FM

As Langkawi is located adjacently to Thailand border and Mainland Kedah, RTM Langkawi FM 104.8MHz from Gunung Raya can be received in Satun, Thailand. 

 

4. Kelantan FM

Available in Narathiwat Province, Thailand such as Waeng, Sungai Golok, Sungai Padi, Tak Bai and part of Mueang Narathiwat districts via 97.3MHz (Bukit Bakar) and 102.9MHz (Wakaf Che Yeh).

5. Perlis FM

FM 102.9MHz from Padang Pauh covers all areas in Perlis state, but RTM Perlis FM is available in small part of Thailand such as Sadao, Padang Besar and Satun (nearby Wang Kelian).

6. Sarawak FM

Available internationally in Brunei and part of West Kalimantan Province, Indonesia.

7. Sabah FM

 

Available in part of Brunei via FM 97.9MHz from Bukit Tampalagus (Sipitang, Sabah). 

Alongside Brunei, Sabah FM is also available in Nunukan Island, Sebatik Island and part of Tarakan, North Kalimantan, Indonesia via Tawau frequency 95.7MHz from Gunung Andrassy.

 

8. Selangor FM

Transmitting via overspill signal from Gunung Ulu Kali without any terrains, RTM Selangor FM 100.9MHz is available internationally in part of Riau Province, Indonesia. 

 

Rokan Hilir regency (Bagansiapiapi) can receive Selangor FM 100.9MHz clearly. 

9. Limbang FM

Limbang is the northernmost division in Sarawak which locates next to Brunei. The Limbang division radio station RTM Limbang FM is available internationally in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei on the frequency 104.9MHz from Bukit Mas transmitting station.

10. Miri FM

Available in Brunei (Kuala Belait and Seria) via 95.7MHz from Bukit Lambir.

11. Sabah VFM

The Sabahan languages radio station is available internationally in part of Brunei via FM 102.9MHz from Bukit Tampalagus, meanwhile it can be tuned in part of North Kalimantan Province such as Sebatik Island, Nunukan Island and few areas in Tarakan, Indonesia via FM 99.3MHz from Gunung Andrassy (Tawau).

12. Tawau FM

Available in part of North Kalimantan Province (Nunukan, Sebatik and Tarakan), Indonesia via FM 100.1MHz from Gunung Andrassy, Tawau, Sabah.

13. Labuan FM

Labuan FM operates with two frequencies, mainly FM 89.4MHz from Bukit Timbalai and FM 103.7MHz from RTM Labuan. The frequency FM 103.7MHz from RTM Labuan is sending feeds from the studio to Bukit Timbalai tower. 

For Brunei, Labuan FM is available certainly via FM 89.4MHz in several locations such as Muara and coastal areas of Lambak.

14. Red FM

The Sarawak's bilingual radio station (English and Chinese) is available internationally in:

a. Brunei

- Bandar Seri Begawan via FM 104.1MHz from Bukit Mas (Limbang)

Every state/regional radio station mainly targets the listeners in particular state, however it can be heard in neighboring state, even international region.

5. Melaka FM

Melaka FM broadcasts on the frequency FM 102.3MHz from Gunung Ledang to cover whole Melaka state, however it can be received in North Johor, South Pahang, part of Negeri Sembilan, and part of Southwest Selangor on FM 102.3MHz.

 

MYTV digital terrestrial television UHF channels and frequencies in Pulau Tioman, Pahang.

 

Tioman Island is located in Rompin District, Pahang. It is located adjacently to Kuala Rompin and Endau from mainland Pahang.

MYTV has no local UHF repeater in Tioman Island like RTM Nasional FM 100.7MHz and Pahang FM 96.8MHz. Alongside with DTH satellite transmission, MYTV viewers in Pulau Tioman can also receive DTT signal via existing transmitters.

 

Pulau Tioman viewers can try to receive MYTV DTT signal from Bukit Tinggi, Johor (Mersing) on UHF 546MHz (CH30) and UHF 562MHz (CH32) with outdoor UHF antenna.

 

In conclusion, MYTV in Tioman Island, Pahang can be received its UHF signal from Bukit Tinggi on UHF 546MHz (CH30) and UHF 562MHz (CH32).

Outside Batam, Karimun and Bintan Islands, Singapore digital terrestrial TV (DVB-T2) received in Riau province, Indonesia (Kepulauan Meranti)

In Indonesia territories, Singapore TV channels are usually available in Batam, Karimun and Bintan where are located in Riau Islands Province as they are not far from Singapore.

Surprisingly, I spotted there was an Indonesia, named Andak Harizal received Singapore TV channels in Selat Panjang, Kepulauan Meranti Regency, Riau Province, Indonesia via a Facebook community group related to Indonesia UHF DVB-T2 topics.

He received Mediacorp Channel 5 in Selat Panjang via UHF 538MHz (CH29) with longer antenna.

Singapore TV channels signal are transmitted from Bukit Batok with 120kW ERP, distance to Selat Panjang is approximately 125km.

In Selat Panjang, TVRI is the only available Indonesia local television channel. For people who watch Indonesia free-to-air commercial TV channels (example: RCTI) in that location, they have to install higher outdoor antenna by receiving signal from either Batam or Pekanbaru.

 

Alongside the TV, several Singapore radio stations are also likely available in Selat Panjang, Riau Province, Indonesia, subject no interference with local radio stations.

Radio Diva Nusantara in Rokan Hilir, Riau Province, Indonesia changed the frequency from FM 100.3MHz to FM 101.7MHz since 9th February 2022. Won't it get interference from Malaysia radio station MY FM 101.8MHz (Gunung Ulu Kali) within Rokan Hilir?

 

The only Indonesia local radio station in Rokan Hilir, Riau Province, Radio Diva Nusantara had recently changed its frequency from FM 100.3MHz to FM 101.7MHz on 9th February 2022.

 

Radio Diva Nusantara is based in Bagansiapiapi, Rokan Hilir regency where is adjacent to Malaysia border with Malacca Straits.

 

In Rokan Hilir, Malaysia radio stations can be received clearly from Gunung Ulu Kali. 

 

I believe the frequency change by Radio Diva Nusantara from FM 100.3MHz to FM 101.7MHz is likely to avoid interference to Radio KLA FM 100.5MHz Dumai coverage.

 

However, when Radio Diva Nusantara uses FM 101.7MHz, I wonder the radio station would be interfered by MY FM 101.8MHz from Malaysia (Gunung Ulu Kali) or not within Rokan Hilir as MY FM 101.8MHz is still clear there.

Using the frequency FM 101.7MHz by Radio Diva Nusantara in Rokan Hilir, Riau, Indonesia will not interfere MY FM 101.8MHz Gunung Ulu Kali coverage within Malaysia due to low transmission tower height by the local radio station, but interference from MY FM 101.8MHz when receiving Radio Diva Nusantara FM 101.7MHz within Rokan Hilir is my concern. 

 

MY FM 101.8MHz is transmitted from Gunung Ulu Kali at 2kW transmitter power with OMNI-directional antenna.

To prevent from being interfered by MY FM 101.8MHz in Rokan Hilir, I highly suggest Radio Diva Nusantara to change to a better frequency again.

 

My suggested new frequency for Radio Diva Nusantara is FM 107.5MHz (formerly it was my preliminary proposed frequency for RRI Pekanbaru PRO-1 Rokan Hilir repeater).

 

Why FM 107.5MHz? 

 

This is because FM 107.5MHz is vacated in Rokan Hilir. Despite the frequency is used by RTM Pahang FM 107.5MHz in Malaysia (Gunung Ulu Kali), but interference between Radio Diva Nusantara FM 107.5MHz and Pahang FM 107.5MHz doesn't exist in Indonesia because Pahang FM 107.5MHz covers only West Pahang, excluding Selangor and Kuala Lumpur. 

 

In the mean time, I should consider the existing radio stations nearby FM 107.5MHz within Riau province, Indonesia where are adjacent with Rokan Hilir. None of radio stations use the frequencies surrounding FM 107.5MHz.

 

Under my proposal of frequency change for Radio Diva Nusantara, here is the result of RF analysis.

It is sufficient to operate at 1kW transmission power for Radio Diva Nusantara FM 107.5MHz for Rokan Hilir regency (mainly Bagansiapiapi and surrounding towns).

 

For RRI Pekanbaru PRO-1 Rokan Hilir repeater frequency proposal, I was used to propose FM 107.5MHz, but as today, none of RRI radio stations are operating the frequencies beyond FM 107.2MHz yet. 

FM 107.2MHz is the last frequency operated by Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI) in Karimun Island (relaying RRI Batam PRO-1). 

 

Between RRI Pekanbaru PRO-1 Rokan Hilir repeater and Radio Diva Nusantara, I believe Radio Diva Nusantara uses the frequency FM 107.5MHz is more suitable than RRI Pekanbaru PRO-1 Rokan Hilir repeater.

 

I also send an email to Radio Diva Nusantara regarding the recent frequency change as I'm curious of the interference from Malaysia radio station, together suggesting the frequency change again.

 

I do hope Radio Diva Nusantara will notice the interference when it uses 101.7MHz, and I do hope it will migrate to a better frequency in order to prevent from being interfered within its service area.

Why do Malaysia TV and radio stations signal easily overspill to Indonesia territories in Riau and North Sumatera provinces, meanwhile Indonesia local terrestrial TV and radio stations have limited coverage?

For many decades, occasionally Indonesia KOMINFO (Ministry of Communication and Information Technology) would raise the issue of Malaysia TV and radio transmission always overspilled their signals to Indonesia territories, causing Indonesia people in bordering areas access Malaysia TV and radio stations than local ones, even interference to the local radio stations.

However, Malaysia TV and radio stations are often ordered to decrease the transmission power to less overspill to Indonesia territories.

The reasons of Malaysia TV and radio stations signal easily overspill to Indonesia territories, and Indonesians who stay in bordering areas access more on Malaysia channels than Indonesia local ones are:

1. Malaysia TV and radio stations transmitter sites are very high, from Gunung Ulu Kali to Gunung Ledang, the height of the sites are between 1200m to 1800m. Between east coast of Sumatera Island and Peninsular Malaysia, there are no having any terrains, so Malaysia TV and radio stations can overspill easily to Riau and part of North Sumatera.

2. About the transmitter sites, Malaysia TV and radio transmitter locations are mountain/hill based towers which means the transmitting towers are located at the top of the mountains/hills, meanwhile Indonesia TV and radio transmitter sites are land based towers. When Indonesia local TV and radio stations are transmitted from the land based towers, due to lower height, so the coverage is very limited in Indonesia, causing Indonesia people access Malaysia channels than local ones.

3. Regarding Indonesia free-to-air commercial television channels such as RCTI, Trans7, Indosiar etc, these TV stations don't even add repeaters in Riau province outside Pekanbaru like TVRI (Indonesia's public TV station) because there are no market value as they are operating TV broadcast commercially without government or public funds. In Indonesia, most of the areas are only covered by TVRI and RRI services where are public broadcaster. When TVRI is not the preferable channels to some Indonesia people while their favorite TV channels like RCTI, SCTV, MNCTV etc are not available in their locations, hence they will switch to watch Malaysia TV channels, even Singapore as the alternative platform.

When most of Indonesian who are staying in Riau bordering areas with Malaysia are watching Malaysia and Singapore TV channels, the Indonesia government are worrying that the people there would lose their nationalism.

4. Information of Riau province outside Pekanbaru is far behind than Medan, Jakarta, Surabaya, Bali etc as most of Indonesia broadcasters does not reach information to Riau rural areas (Rokan Hilir). Coincidentally, because of the strategic geographical condition where Rokan Hilir can receive overspill signals of TV and radio stations from Malaysia, this causes the people to access Malaysia information than Indonesia in Rokan Hilir.

My suggestion to Indonesia broadcasters (especially TV) to improve their coverage in Riau province, Indonesia.

1. Some of Indonesia digital terrestrial TV towers are using low power transmitters to cover the targeting location, actually the TV broadcasters can increase their transmission power to reach more coverage, even they can increase the antenna gain by using higher gain of UHF transmitting antenna.

2. For commercial TV broadcasters who have transmitter in the capital city of Riau province, they can use high power transmitter and higher gain of UHF antenna, this would result higher ERP (effective radiated power), and they can reach more coverage without adding auxiliary transmitters in rural areas where have no commercial value.

Malaysia digital terrestrial television UHF DVB-T2 (MYTV) is received in Rokan Hulu Regency, Riau Province, Indonesia.

 

Generally the Malaysia digital terrestrial television channels (MYTV) can be only received in Batam, Indonesia via Gunung Pulai transmitter, even some Batam people can receive MYTV via Bukit Tinggi DVB-T2 DTT transmitters as well. 

 

In Riau province, usually the coastal regencies such as Rokan Hilir, Dumai, Bengkalis and Pulau Meranti can receive MYTV overspill UHF DVB-T2 signals from Malaysia as they are adjacent to Malaysia with Malacca Straits.

 

However, MYTV digital terrestrial television transmission from Malaysia can overspill to Rokan Hulu, Riau Province, Indonesia. As I'm a member of Indonesia UHF DVB-T2 Digital TV community group on Facebook, I have spotted someone receives Malaysia DTT channels in Kota Tengah, Rokan Hulu Regency, Riau Provine, Indonesia.

 

Thanks to Jamahir from Kota Tengah, Rokan Hulu for sharing the photos of receiving Malaysia digital TV channels in his location on the Facebook community group.

 

According to him, he receives Malaysia digital TV channels on the frequency UHF 650MHz (CH 43) & UHF 666MHz (CH 45) in Kota Tengah, Rokan Hulu Regency, Riau Province, Indonesia with long receiving antenna (almost same with Muar TV antenna where people received Singapore TV), but he is not sure where the exact transmitter site of these frequencies. So, I inform that MYTV UHF 650MHz and UHF 666MHz DVB-T2 signals are transmitted from Gunung Ulu Kali in Genting Highlands, Pahang, Malaysia.

 

MYTV digital TV signal from Malaysia is not consistently available in Rokan Hulu actually, I believe it could be the tropospheric propagation. 

In addition, some of people in Rokan Hulu claimed that Malaysia TV signal is stronger than local one. In Indonesia, most of the TV towers within Riau province are mostly land based, instead of hill/mountain based towers like Malaysia. Hence, the coverage of local TV channels are more limited than Malaysia channels in Riau, Indonesia.

 

Gunung Ulu Kali transmitter site is very high actually with the height about 1772 meters. Therefore, it can overspill to Riau province, Indonesia easily.

 

Transmission distance between Gunung Ulu Kali to Kota Tengah, Rokan Hulu Regency, Riau Province, Indonesia is 295km.
