Mutiara FM and Nasional FM are interfering each other in Georgetown and Butterworth, but no complains from the listeners.

If you are listening to a radio station on FM 93.9MHz in Georgetown, Butterworth, Bukit Mertajam, Seberang Jaya, Permatang Pauh and most of Penang areas, you will hear the co-channel interference of two different radio stations.

In fact, FM 93.9MHz is used by two different radio stations for different broadcast coverage. At first, Mutiara FM uses this frequency in Gunung Jerai to cover northern part of Penang Island, covering from Tanjung Bungah to Teluk Bahang where 95.7MHz Bukit Penara transmitter cannot be tuned there, next Nasional FM is also using FM 93.9MHz in Bukit Penara and Bukit Genting for Paya Terubong and Balik Pulau respectively to cover the blindspot coverage of FM 100.5MHz Gunung Jerai transmitter.

Both radio stations are using low power transmitters, but different coverage.

* Mutiara FM 93.9MHz Gunung Jerai at 0.1kW power (Tanjung Bungah, Batu Ferringhi, Teluk Bahang)

* Nasional FM 93.9MHz Bukit Penara at 0.25kW power (Paya Terubong & Ayer Itam)

* Nasional FM 93.9MHz Bukit Genting at 0.1kW power (Balik Pulau & Teluk Kumbar)

Mutiara FM 93.9MHz Gunung Jerai has co-channel interference with Nasional FM in most of Penang areas, but the signal of Nasional FM is actually transmitted from Bukit Penara, not Bukit Genting actually. If you are tuning FM 93.9MHz at Penang Bridge, the co-channel interference happens between Mutiara FM from Gunung Jerai and  Nasional FM from Bukit Penara.

The co-channel interference on 93.9MHz does not affect the listeners because both radio stations have clearer frequencies in affected areas of FM 93.9MHz.

When I was in Butterworth to tune my radio on FM 93.9MHz, Mutiara FM and Nasional FM were interfering each other, but I could tune them on other clearer frequencies.

The video was recorded on 26th November 2024 at 6am.

Nasional FM is tuned on 100.5MHz from Gunung Jerai, meanwhile Mutiara FM is tuned on 95.7MHz from Bukit Penara.

1. Kangar, Perlis

2. Arau, Perlis

3. Padang Besar, Perlis

4. Alor Setar, Kedah

5. Pendang, Kedah

6. Teluk Bahang, Pulau Pinang

7. Batu Ferringhi, Pulau Pinang

8. Butterworth, Pulau Pinang

Fly FM radio reception in Perlis on 99.1MHz (TX_Alor Setar Tower)

Fly FM has Alor Setar frequency on 99.1MHz, launched since 2007, currently it is transmitted from Alor Setar Tower. It is the only English radio station which does not transmit from Gunung Jerai transmission tower like other radio stations such as Hitz FM, Mix FM, Lite FM and Traxx FM due to unavailable frequencies in Gunung Jerai.

While Hitz FM 92.8MHz, Mix FM 91.0MHz, Lite FM 104.4MHz and Traxx FM 98.7MHz are receivable clearly in large part of Perlis areas, but Fly FM 99.1MHz cannot be tuned in Perlis state clearly like other radio stations because Fly FM is transmitted from Alor Setar Tower with low power transmitter as much as 0.25kW only.

From Alor Setar to Kangar and Arau, Fly FM 99.1MHz can be only tuned clearly until Kodiang in Kedah actually, then signal becomes weak in Arau.

In Perlis, I recorded the radio reception videos of Fly FM 99.1MHz in 4 locations.

1. Arau

2. Kangar

3. Beseri

4. Padang Besar

Among these 4 locations of Perlis state, Arau is the only clearest coverage of Fly FM 99.1MHz, meanwhile Kangar is the most difficult location to tune to Fly FM on 99.1MHz, even the radio reception of Fly FM in Beseri is slightly clearer than Kangar and Padang Besar.

Fly FM 99.1MHz has no signal in Padang Besar town. During my way from Padang Besar to Changlun, Fly FM 99.1MHz becomes clear again in FELDA Chuping, Perlis.

In addition, I also recorded the radio reception videos of its sister station, Kool 101 in Perlis state on the frequency FM 107.3MHz which is also transmitted from Alor Setar Tower with low power transmitter 0.25kW.

Compare both radio stations, Fly FM 99.1MHz signal is slightly clearer than Kool 101 FM 107.3MHz in Perlis state. In Kangar, Kool 101 FM 107.3MHz is interfered by Thailand's radio station PSU Radio Pattani FM 107.25MHz.

By conducting overall radio signal monitoring in Perlis, currently Arau and Kuala Perlis are the only best listening coverage of Fly FM and Kool 101.

==Radio reception of Fly FM 99.1MHz & Kool 101 FM 107.3MHz in Perlis (from best to worst)==

1. Arau

2. Beseri (Fly FM 99.1MHz only)

3. Kangar & Padang Besar (mostly no signal)

* Jitra, Kedah

* Arau, Perlis

* Kangar, Perlis

1. Seluruh negeri Pulau Pinang (95.7MHz Bukit Penara/93.9MHz Gunung Jerai/90.9MHz Bukit Genting)

2. Kedah Tengah, Kedah Utara dan sebahagian negeri Perlis (93.9MHz Gunung Jerai)

3. Perak Utara (95.7MHz Bukit Penara/93.9MHz Gunung Jerai)

3. Sungai Petani & Gurun, Kedah

4. Pendang, Kedah

5. Jitra, Kedah

6. Teluk Bahang, Pulau Pinang

7. Batu Ferringhi, Pulau Pinang

8. Tanjung Bungah, Pulau Pinang

9. Gurney dan Georgetown, Pulau Pinang

Di Georgetown, rakaman video penerimaan siaran Perlis FM diambil di aras ke-65 Menara KOMTAR.

10. Selama, Perak

Selamat mencuba.

BFM will be interfered by Perlis FM in some Georgetown area, Penang if it uses Bukit Sungai Kechil transmitter on the frequency FM 102.9MHz, even IKIM FM 102.7MHz Bukit Genting coverage in South Penang and part of Kedah will be interfered by BFM 102.9MHz. Hence, there is no way of BFM to expand coverage in Penang via frequency transmission.

Since March 2019, I attempted to propose BFM to launch Penang frequency on 102.9MHz by using Bukit Sungai Kechil transmitter in Bandar Baharu, Kedah.

Previously I wrote an article about my concern if I proposed Bukit Sungai Kechil transmitter on 102.9MHz for BFM Penang frequency transmission which I wrote 2 years ago.

Recently I visited Penang for radio DXing and holiday, I went to Georgetown on 26th November 2024 and conducted the distant radio signal monitoring of Perlis FM 102.9MHz Padang Pauh transmitter at two locations in Georgetown such as KOMTAR and Gurney.

As there is no terrain between Perlis and Georgetown of East Penang Island, RTM Perlis FM 102.9MHz Padang Pauh signal can overspill to part of Penang, some of Georgetown areas can receive this radio station loudly, but weakly.

I managed to catch RTM Perlis FM 102.9MHz signal at two different locations of Georgetown such as Gurney Drive and Komtar tower.

At the 65th floor of Komtar tower, Perlis FM signal could be detected when I tuned at top floor of Komtar tower, but facing to the north.

In the vicnity of Gurney area, Perlis FM 102.9MHz could be tuned weakly on the ground, but Gurney has high rise buildings and condominiums, so Perlis FM 102.9MHz has clear signal when listen at higher floor of the buildings and condominiums in Gurney, Penang.

When it comes to this situation, BFM 102.9MHz from Bukit Sungai Kechil will have co-channel interference with Perlis FM 102.9MHz Padang Pauh transmitter in Georgetown, Gurney, and Tanjung Bungah, even BFM 102.9MHz will be interfered by Perlis FM in Kepala Batas of North Seberang Perai district, Penang.

Co-channel interference between BFM and Perlis FM in Georgetown on 102.9MHz likely happens for those listeners tune at higher floors of the office buildings and residential apartments/condominiums.

In addition, the transmission of BFM 102.9MHz Bukit Sungai Kechil for Penang can cause interference to IKIM FM 102.7MHz Bukit Genting coverage in South Penang and part of Kedah.

During my departure from Butterworth to Kuala Lumpur on 27th November 2024, I dropped by Parit Buntar to have Chinese breakfast via Bandar Baharu toll exit. From Bandar Baharu toll exit to Parit Buntar town, I monitored IKIM FM 89.0MHz (Gunung Jerai) and 102.7MHz (Bukit Genting) signal all the way, the radio reception of IKIM FM 102.7MHz is clearer than 89.0MHz in Bandar Baharu, Kedah overall.

IKIM FM 102.7MHz Bukit Genting transmitter mainly covers Balik Pulau and Teluk Kumbar in southwest of Penang Island where 89.0MHz Gunung Jerai transmitter cannot be received there, but it also covers 89.0MHz Gunung Jerai blindspot coverage in South Kedah like Selama, Bandar Baharu and Lubuk Buntar. If BFM uses 102.9MHz in Bukit Sungai Kechil, the IKIM FM's listeners who tune on 102.7MHz in Bandar Baharu, and Selama, Kedah will hear interference noise of BFM, while 89.0MHz signal is weak there.

On PLUS highway from Nibong Tebal to Bandar Baharu toll exit interchange, IKIM FM 89.0MHz signal becomes weak, then I switch to 102.7MHz, the signal is clearer than 89.0MHz. This means that IKIM FM is tuned on 102.7MHz in Bandar Baharu, Kedah. In addition, IKIM FM in Selama, Kedah is also tuned on 102.7MHz because 89.0MHz is very weak there.

In conclusion, FM 102.9MHz is not suitable for Bukit Sungai Kechil transmission due to interference to IKIM FM 102.7MHz coverage in Bandar Baharu, Kedah where 89.0MHz is weak. As there are no available frequencies and transmitter sites for Penang, therefore there is no way of BFM to expand coverage there after a detailed on site radio field stength test and DXing, but due to the growth of digital technology, BFM Radio is available in Penang, even the whole world via online streaming platform and BFM mobile application.

Penang people can tune to BFM via mobile app, podcasts and online streaming platform.

==RF analysis of BFM 102.9MHz Bukit Sungai Kechil transmission for Penang (as 29th November 2024 after conducting a detailed radio DXing and on site field strength test)==

102.9MHz: BFM Bukit Sungai Kechil

102.9MHz: Perlis FM Padang Pauh

*  Frequency separation: 0kHz

* Result: Co-channel interference between two radio stations in Gurney and some Georgetown high rise buildings

102.7MHz: IKIM FM Bukit Genting

102.9MHz: BFM Bukit Sungai Kechil

* Frequency separation: 200kHz

* Result: Adjacent channel inteference to IKIM FM 102.7MHz coverage in Bandar Baharu & Selama, Kedah

Melody FM 103.0MHz (Gunung Ulu Kali) is the furthest radio station tuned in Georgetown, Penang.

In Georgetown, Penang, Astro Chinese classic radio station Melody FM is tuned clearly on 106.5MHz from Gunung Jerai, meanwhile 104.9MHz from Bukit Larut is still receivable there and 98.5MHz from Gunung Kledang Ipoh has a very mild signal, but I had captured Melody FM radio signal on 103.0MHz in Georgetown.

Two days ago, I was in Georgetown, Penang to conduct radio DXing and eat the local delicacy. When I was in Georgetown, my main target was to check Perlis FM 102.9MHz Padang Pauh radio signal because it could overspill to Gurney area. Then, I checked Perlis FM 102.9MHz radio signal at 65th floor of KOMTAR tower.

After leaving KOMTAR tower and having lunch at a Nasi Kandar restaurant, I randomly checked Perlis FM 102.9MHz signal at Jalan Magazine area near 1st Avenue Shopping Mall, but I heard adjacent radio signal suddenly which was in Chinese, then I switched the radio dial from 102.9 to 103.0. After that, I heard a weak radio signal of Chinese broadcast on FM 103.0MHz.

It was Melody FM 103.0MHz from Gunung Ulu Kali tuned in Georgetown.

In Georgetown, Seberang Jaya and Gelugor of Penang Island, Melody FM 103.0MHz and Perlis FM 102.9MHz are interfering each other.

From Jalan Magazine to Gurney Drive, Perlis FM 102.9MHz had interference noise of Melody FM 103.0MHz at Jalan Magazine, then Melody FM 103.0MHz was interfered by Perlis FM 102.9MHz again at Jalan Burma.

* Frequency: FM 103.0MHz

* Power: 2kW

* Transmission site: Gunung Ulu Kali, Pahang

* Receiving site: Georgetown, Penang (near Jalan Magazine)

* Distance: 274km

By calculating the receiving distance, Melody FM 103.0MHz from Gunung Ulu Kali becomes the furthest radio station that I tuned in Georgetown, Penang.

Mix FM is needed to be tuned on 91.3MHz (Bukit Larut) in Teluk Kumbar and Balik Pulau of Penang Island due to interference noise of RTM Mutiara FM 90.9MHz Bukit Genting transmitter

In Penang, Mix FM is usually tuned on 91.0MHz which is transmitted from Gunung Jerai, actually Mix FM 91.0MHz is for Georgetown, Batu Ferringhi, Teluk Bahang, Bayan Lepas and Seberang Perai, however due to RTM Mutiara FM is using 90.9MHz in Bukit Genting for Balik Pulau and Southwest Penang Island, Mix FM 91.0MHz cannot be tuned there.

From Georgetown to Balik Pulau via Teluk Kumbar road, Mix FM 91.0MHz can be only listened up to Bayan Lepas. Then, the interference of Mutiara FM 90.9MHz starts after Bayan Lepas when driving to Balik Pulau via Teluk Kumbar.

When Mix FM 91.0MHz becomes unavailable in Teluk Kumbar and Balik Pulau, alternatively the listeners can continue listening to Mix FM in these two areas on 91.3MHz which is Taiping frequency (Bukit Larut).

From Gelugor to Balik Pulau via Bayan Lepas road, I was listening to Mix FM on 91.0MHz. When 91.0MHz was badly interfered by Mutiara FM 90.9MHz in Teluk Kumbar, then I continued listening to Mix FM by switching the frequency to 91.3MHz and drove to Balik Pulau for my favorite Asam Laksa as breakfast.

The radio reception of Mix FM 91.3MHz Bukit Larut transmitter is moderate in Teluk Kumbar, but it is not so clear in Balik Pulau town.

Dear all Penang listeners who tune Mix FM in Balik Pulau and Teluk Kumbar, please tune the radio frequency dial to 91.3MHz when 91.0MHz is "jammed" by Mutiara FM 90.9MHz.

Radio reception videos of Mix FM 91.3MHz in Teluk Kumbar and Balik Pulau are attached here as evidence.

* Frekuensi: FM 104.1MHz

* Kuasa pemancar: 0.25kW

* Tempat pemancar: Bukit Larut, Perak

* Kawasan penerima: Arau, Perlis

* Jarak: 184km

* Frekuensi: FM 102.9MHz

* Kuasa: 2kW

* Tempat pemancar: RTM Padang Pauh, Kangar, Perlis

* Tempat penerima: Pekan Selama, Perak

* Jarak penerimaan: 151km

94FM Club from Hat Yai, Thailand (FM 94.0MHz) radio reception in Langkawi Island, Kedah, Malaysia (compilation from 2021 to 2024)

In the past, the frequency FM 94.0MHz was dominated by a Satun based Thailand radio station, 94PFM We Love Satun in Langkawi Island, Kedah, Malaysia, but 94PFM ceased broadcast since January 2022 when the radio station founder passed away.

Since 2022, FM 94.0MHz is an empty frequency in Satun, Thailand, but in Langkawi, FM 94.0MHz became another overspilled Thailand radio station from Hat Yai, namely 94FM Club.

94FM Club is a hot contemporary Thailand radio station in Hat Yai which is also available in Perlis and part of North Kedah, Malaysia, the transmitter site is located at Khlong Kien Road, in Tambon Hat Yai, Songkhla Province, Thailand with 0.5kW transmitter power.

In Langkawi Island, 94FM Club Hat Yai would have adjacent channel interference with RTM Mutiara FM 93.9MHz Gunung Jerai transmitter occassionally, subject to the receiving location as Langkawi Island locations are varied.

Here are the compilation videos of tuning 94FM Club in Langkawi Island, Kedah, Malaysia by Sarawut DXpedition from 2021-2024.

The radio reception videos of 94FM Club Hat Yai above are still clear in various locations of Langkawi Island, I may think the receiving locations' height are high enough to tune this Thai hot contemporary radio station clearly.
