In Malaysia, most of AM radio stations from foreign countries can be only tuned during nighttime because AM radio waves can transmit very far from the evening to morning. Distant AM radio stations cannot be received during the daytime as the Sun absorbs AM radio waves.
However, in Kota Bharu, the state capital of Kelantan, there are two AM radio stations from Vietnam can be received all the time.
On 31st May 2026, I paid a small visit in Kelantan for 2 days 1 night to conduct radio DXing in Kota Bharu, Tumpat, Pengkalan Kubor, Pasir Mas and Kuala Krai, notably FM frequency band. Before reaching the hotel, I took opportunity to tune two AM radio stations from Voice of Vietnam in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, Malaysia at noon.
1. Voice of Vietnam VOV-1 AM 711kHz
2. Voice of Vietnam VOV-2 AM 783kHz
Videos were recorded on 31st May 2026 between 1330 hours and 1400 hours (UTC+8). Both radio stations are transmitted from Cần Thơ, Vietnam, each station operates at 500kW transmitter power. Receiving distance from Cần Thơ to Kota Bharu is 576km.
Voice of Vietnam VOV-1 AM 711kHz and VOV-2 AM 783kHz can be tuned all the time too in coastal areas of Kelantan and Terengganu. For the rest of Malaysia areas, these Vietnam radio stations can be only tuned during nighttime.
Kota Bharu is the best town in Kelantan, Malaysia to receive AM radio stations from Voice of Vietnam VOV-1 (711kHz) and VOV-2 (783kHz) all the time.
