RTM (Radio Televisyen Malaysia) Sarawak should switch Nasional FM Kanowit frequency 104.5MHz to Sibu FM/Wai FM Iban to cater more local listeners in Kanowit, Sarawak.

RTM Sarawak launched two radio stations, Nasional FM 104.5MHz and Sarawak FM 107.1MHz in Kanowit, Sarawak by installing the transmitters in Bukit Memaloh because Kanowit cannot receive Bukit Lima and Bukit Singgalang radio stations clearly.

Kanowit is a small town in Sibu Division, it is a busy town on weekend and festival seasons because many people who go to Kapit will stop there before continuing their journey.

When I was in Kanowit, Sarawak, I could only tune RTM Sarawak FM 107.1MHz as the clearest frequency, meanwhile Nasional FM 104.5MHz had audio feed issue. For the rest RTM radio stations, I had to tune them via Bukit Singgalang transmitter.

Between Bukit Singgalang and Bukit Lima, the signal from Bukit Singgalang is slightly better than Bukit Lima in Kanowit town when I tuned Ai FM, Traxx FM, Radio Klasik, Nasional FM, Red FM and Sibu FM.

As Kanowit has many Iban people, RTM Sibu FM/Wai FM Iban is not so clear there. In Kanowit, RTM Sibu FM/Wai FM Iban is tuned on 102.1MHz from Bukit Singgalang, but the signal is not so clear, meanwhile 87.6MHz from Bukit Lima is weaker than 102.1MHz.

In my opinion, by not applying new frequency for RTM Sibu FM/Wai FM Iban in Kanowit, I suggest RTM Sarawak to cease Nasional FM broadcast and replace with Sibu FM/Wai FM Iban because Sibu FM/Wai FM Iban is more localized than Nasional FM in Kanowit, Sarawak.

Between Nasional FM and Sibu FM/Wai FM Iban, I think Sibu FM/Wai FM Iban is more important than Nasional FM in Kanowit, Sarawak.

To listen to RTM national news, RTM Sarawak FM 107.1MHz is available on selected hours.

If RTM switches Nasional FM Kanowit frequency 104.5MHz to Sibu FM/Wai FM Iban, the Kanowit's Iban people can tune to Wai FM Iban clearly, so the radio reception of Sibu FM 104.5MHz will be clearer than 102.1MHz in Kanowit, Sarawak.

I hope RTM Sarawak will launch Sibu FM's Kanowit frequency by taking over Nasional FM's slot (104.5MHz).

The radio reception of Hitz FM 105.1MHz, MY FM 105.9MHz, Era FM Sarawak 96.3MHz and Tea FM 100.7MHz in Sarikei, Sarawak

Except Cats FM, from 2017 to 2019, there were 4 commercial radio stations launched in Sibu, Sarawak such as Hitz FM 105.1MHz, MY FM 105.9MHz, Era FM Sarawak 96.3MHz and Tea FM 100.7MHz. These radio stations are transmitted from Bukit Lima, covering Sibu town and surrounding areas only like Julau, Bintangor.

Hitz FM 105.1MHz, MY FM 105.9MHz, Era FM Sarawak 96.3MHz and Tea FM 100.7MHz are still available in Sarikei, but moderate radio signal.

Here are my videos of tuning Sibu commercial radio stations (except Cats FM) in Sarikei, Sarawak.

1. Hitz FM 105.1MHz

2. MY FM 105.9MHz

3. Tea FM 100.7MHz

4. Era FM Sarawak 96.3MHz

Receiving distance from Bukit Lima to Sarikei is about 39km.

Based on the videos above, the Bukit Lima transmitted radio stations are moderate in Sarikei. From Sibu to Sri Aman, these radio stations can be only received up to Sarikei, Sarawak, then zero signal beyond Sarikei.

Despite Wai FM Iban late morning (also known as brunch) program "Wai 9-12" can be tuned in Sri Aman and Betong Division, Sarawak via frequency transmission when Sri Aman FM airs Malay local program.

In Sri Aman and Betong Division, Sarawak, RTM Wai FM Iban is mostly available through Sri Aman FM, except 9am to 12pm slot due to Malay local program.

Sri Aman FM relays Wai FM Iban everyday from 12am to 9am, then 12pm to 12am, except Ramadan month from 6pm to 7pm. From 9am to 12pm, Sri Aman FM has Malay language local program, Spektra 9-12, so RTM Wai FM Iban is not available on Sri Aman FM.

However, in Sri Aman and Betong, alongside RTM Klik, Astro and MYTV platform, the listeners can tune to Wai 9-12 on Wai FM Iban via frequencies transmission by tuning on 101.3MHz from Kuching and SW 11665kHz from RTM Kajang.

Here are the radio reception videos of tuning Wai FM Iban in Sri Aman and Betong Divisions, I mostly tuned on 101.3MHz from Gunung Serapi because 106.9MHz Gunung Ampungan has no signal there.

1. Simanggang, Sarawak (147km)

2. Betong, Sarawak (151km)

3. Engkilili, Sarawak (172km)

4. Spaoh, Sarawak (145km)

5. Debak, Sarawak (138km)

6. Saratok, Sarawak (129km)

7. Roban, Sarawak (129km)

By conducting overall radio signal monitoring of RTM Wai FM Iban in these 7 locations via 101.3MHz from Gunung Serapi (meanwhile 106.9MHz Gunung Ampungan has no signal), the FM 101.3MHz is not a good alternative frequency to be tuned by the listeners for Wai 9-12 segment in Sri Aman and Betong, but SW 11665kHz is the best alternative frequency.

The weakest coverage of Wai FM Iban 101.3MHz are Betong and Spaoh, meanwhile it has better signal in Roban and Saratok.

To tune RTM Wai FM Iban's brunch radio program "Wai 9-12" outside Kuching and Serian via frequency transmission, I strongly recommend to tune the radio on shortwave broadcast on SW 11665kHz which is very clear in entire Sarawak. Cheap shortwave radio receivers are mostly available at electric shops in Sarawak, the listeners can tune digitally via RTM Klik, Astro CH 871 or MYTV CH710.

RTM Wai FM Bidayuh/Radio Kayan signal monitoring in Sri Aman and Betong Divisions, Sarawak.

RTM Wai FM Bidayuh and Radio Kayan celebrate 15 years anniversary as an individual radio station in 2025 by launching new frequencies in Kuching and Serian. Before this, Wai FM Bidayuh and Radio Kayan were shared together with Wai FM Iban on FM 101.3MHz in Kuching and FM 106.9MHz in Serian.

Since 2010, Wai FM Bidayuh and Radio Kayan were no longer shared with Iban because Wai FM Bidayuh and Radio Kayan were given new frequencies, so the 101.3MHz in Kuching and 106.9MHz in Serian became Wai FM Iban.

Wai FM Bidayuh and Radio Kayan broadcast on FM 106.1MHz in Kuching, meanwhile FM 101.7MHz in Serian.

Unlike Wai FM Iban, in terms of coverage, Wai FM Bidayuh and Radio Kayan are only available in Kuching and Serian without coverage expansion to entire Sarawak because most of Bidayuh people stay in Kuching and Serian, except migrants to other divisions of Sarawak.

Outside Kuching and Serian, Wai FM Iban is available in entire Sarawak region through local radio stations relay (Sri Aman FM, Sibu FM, Miri FM, Bintulu FM and Limbang FM), but Wai FM Iban broadcast on local radio stations are not full fledged in favor of several local program, hence several airtime of Wai FM Iban is not available certainly.

Compare to Wai FM Iban, in my opinion, Wai FM Bidayuh and Radio Kayan are niche radio station actually. Although Wai FM Bidayuh and Radio Kayan are only available in Kuching and Serian through frequencies transmission, but they are also available in Sri Aman and Betong Divisions.

From 18th to 20th May 2025, I visited Sarawak by coming to Sibu, Mukah, Sri Aman, Betong and Sarikei Divisions. On 19th May 2025, I conducted the radio signal monitoring of Wai FM Bidayuh/Radio Kayan in 6 locations of Sri Aman and Betong Divisions, mostly on the frequency 106.1MHz from Gunung Serapi, meanwhile 101.7MHz Gunung Ampungan transmitter is hard to be tuned in these locations.

1. Simanggang, Sarawak

* Tuning frequency: 106.1MHz Gunung Serapi & 101.7MHz Gunung Ampungan

* Distance: 147km (for 106.1MHz) & 94km (for 101.7MHz)

* Result: 106.1MHz is slightly stronger than 101.7MHz

2. Betong, Sarawak

* Tuning frequency: 106.1MHz Gunung Serapi

* Distance: 151km

* Result: 106.1MHz signal is extremely weak

3. Engkilili, Sarawak

* Tuning frequency: 106.1MHz Gunung Serapi & 101.7MHz Gunung Ampungan

* Distance: 172km (for 106.1MHz); 112km (for 101.7MHz)

* Result: 106.1MHz is slightly stronger than 101.7MHz

4. Spaoh, Sarawak

* Tuning frequency: 106.1MHz Gunung Serapi & 101.7MHz Gunung Ampungan

* Distance: 145km (for 106.1MHz); 102km (for 101.7MHz)

* Result: Both are difficultly tuned in Spaoh, but 106.1MHz has more signal than 101.7MHz

5. Debak, Sarawak

* Tuning frequency: 106.1MHz Gunung Serapi

* Distance: 138km

6. Saratok, Sarawak

* Tuning frequency: 106.1MHz Gunung Serapi

* Distance: 129km

7. Roban, Sarawak

* Tuning frequency: 106.1MHz Gunung Serapi

* Distance: 129km

Videos are recorded in 4K HDR resolution by using Sony Xperia 5 V smartphone.

In Sri Aman and Betong Divisions, I tuned to Wai FM Bidayuh/Radio Kayan mostly on 106.1MHz from Gunung Serapi because 101.7MHz from Gunung Ampungan is very weak and almost zero signal.

Betong and Spaoh are the weakest coverage of RTM Wai FM Bidayuh, regardless 106.1MHz or 101.7MHz. FM 101.7MHz from Gunung Ampungan has no signal mostly in Betong, Spaoh, Roban, Saratok and Debak. In Engkilili, 106.1MHz has better signal than 101.7MHz.

Overall from Sri Aman to Roban, Wai FM Bidayuh/Radio Kayan on 106.1MHz has more signal than 101.7MHz. On Pan Borneo Highway, Wai FM Bidayuh 101.7MHz Gunung Ampungan transmitter only covers from Serian until Melugu.

Dear all Bidayuh and Kayan radio listeners, by driving from Kuching to Sibu/Bintulu/Miri via Pan Borneo Highway, Wai FM Bidayuh and Radio Kayan can be tuned from Simanggang until Roban and Sarikei through frequency transmission on 106.1MHz, but weak signal.

List of radio stations in Sri Aman, Sarawak (Simanggang)

From 18th May 2025 to 20th May 2025, I was in Sarawak to conduct radio DXing in 12 locations, covering Sibu, Kanowit, Sarikei, Simanggang, Engkilili, Betong, Saratok, Roban, Mukah, Debak, Spaoh and Dalat.

On the 2nd day of my Sarawak trip, I drove to Simanggang (Sri Aman) from Sibu, then I visited my friend in Betong.

Simanggang is the capital of Sri Aman Division, it takes 3 hours drive from Sibu via PAN Borneo Highway. Simanggang is a relaxing town in Sarawak. The postcode of Simanggang is 95000.

For radio stations, the listeners can only tune to RTM radio channels (Radio Klasik FM 107.3MHz, Nasional FM 98.9MHz, Sarawak FM 100.3MHz, Traxx FM 103.8MHz, Ai FM 105.3MHz, Red FM 106.3MHz and Sri Aman FM 89.5MHz) and Cats FM 88.7MHz in Simanggang where are transmitted from Bukit Temudok. Alongside the local radio station from Bukit Temudok, I can receive several weak radio stations from Kuching (Gunung Serapi/Bukit Djin/Bukit Antu), Sarikei (Bukit Kayu Malam) and Off Spaoh in Simanggang town, Sarawak.

On 19th May 2025, I tuned to 8 Kuching radio stations and 1 Sarikei radio station in Simanggang town by following below.

1. Kupi-Kupi FM 92.5MHz (128km from Bukit Djin)

2. Hot FM 94.3MHz (147km from Gunung Serapi)

Hot FM 94.3MHz is still receivable in Simanggang, but adjacent channel interference noise of RTM Sarawak FM 94.4MHz from Off Spaoh transmitter was heard during my radio signal monitoring of Hot FM 94.3MHz.

3. Eight FM 98.3MHz (128km from Bukit Djin)

4. Bernama Radio FM 100.9MHz (128km from Bukit Antu)

5. RTM Wai FM Iban FM 101.3MHz (147km from Gunung Serapi)

Note: 106.9MHz from Bukit Ampungan has no signal in Simanggang, Sarawak.

6. RTM Wai FM Bidayuh/Radio Kayan 106.1MHz (147km from Gunung Serapi)

I compared the signal between 106.1MHz (Gunung Serapi) and 101.7MHz (Gunung Ampungan Serian) in Simanggang town, RTM Wai FM Bidayuh 106.1MHz signal is slightly better than 101.7MHz, but I don't hear adjacent channel interference noise of RTM Red FM 106.3MHz from Bukit Temudok because my TECSUN PL-380 is high sensitivity radio receiver where I can detect less interference noise.

7. Tea FM 102.7MHz (128km from Bukit Antu)

8. Kool 101 FM 104.3MHz (143km from Bukit Djin)

9. RTM Sibu FM 94.6MHz (68km from Bukit Kayu Malam)

None of Astro radio stations from Bukit Djin, Kuching (eg: Sinar FM, MY FM, Mix FM, Lite FM, Melody FM, Hitz FM and Era FM Sarawak) are receivable in Sri Aman, meanwhile IKIM FM 93.7MHz has no signal there too.

In Simanggang town,

* Era FM 96.1MHz is null by RTM Ai FM 96.0MHz Off Spaoh transmitter

* Sinar FM 102.1MHz has no signal totally

* MY FM 96.9MHz has no signal totally

* Hitz FM 95.3MHz is null by RTM Traxx FM 95.2MHz Off Spaoh transmitter

* Mix FM 97.7MHz is null by RTM Red FM 97.8MHz Off Spaoh transmitter

* Lite FM 100.1MHz has no signal totally and leaves adjacent frequency noise of RTM Sarawak FM 100.3MHz from Bukit Temudok

* Melody FM 103.7MHz is null by RTM Traxx FM 103.8MHz from Bukit Temudok

* IKIM FM 93.7MHz is null by RTM Nasional FM 93.6MHz Off Spaoh transmitter

Compare to Sibu, Bintulu, Mukah and Betong, in my opinion, Simanggang is the best Sarawak town for radio DXing activity.

Here is a full list of the radio stations in Simanggang, Sarawak.

* RTM Radio Klasik FM 107.3MHz Bukit Temudok

* RTM Nasional FM 98.9MHz Bukit Temudok

* RTM Sarawak FM 100.3MHz Bukit Temudok

* RTM Traxx FM 103.8MHz Bukit Temudok

1. MY FM 105.9MHz

2. TEA FM 100.7MHz

在泗里街, MY FM 105.9MHz比較清楚,但TEA FM 100.7MHz的訊號其實不理想.

從詩巫去斯里阿曼, 這兩家詩巫私營電台最遠只能在泗里街聽到.

Latest radio listenership rating of Media Prima Audio's radio stations (Nielsen CMV from January 2024 to December 2024)

1. Hot FM: 3.9 millions listeners weekly

2. Fly FM: 2.2 millions listeners weekly

3. Kool 101: 480k listeners weekly

4. Molek FM: 710k listeners weekly

5. Eight FM: 360k listeners weekly

Source:

* Nielsen Consumer & Media View (CMV), from January 2024 to December 2024

* Rojaklah.com

Kool 101 can gain almost 1 million listeners if its Klang Valley frequency FM 101.3MHz is transmitted from Gunung Ulu Kali due to wider coverage.

Until today, Media Prima Audio's radio station, Kool 101 is still transmitted from Bukit Sungai Besi on FM 101.3MHz for Klang Valley area, the coverage is only limited in Klang Valley and small part of Negeri Sembilan. In South Selangor, Kool 101 FM 101.3MHz has adjacent channel interference from THR Raaga FM 101.5MHz Gunung Telapak Buruk.

Based on Nielsen CMV radio listenership survey from January 2024 to December 2024, Kool 101 gained 480k listeners weekly. As today, Kool 101 only broadcasts in Klang Valley, Penang, Alor Setar and Kuching.

If Kool 101 FM 101.3MHz is transmitted from Gunung Ulu Kali with good radio content, this radio station can reach 1 million listeners weekly because Gunung Ulu Kali coverage is wider than Bukit Sungai Besi. With wider coverage, this allows Kool 101 to get more listeners outside Klang Valley. I may expect the signal will be clearer in North Selangor.

Gunung Ulu Kali is located in Genting Highlands, Pahang which is the main radio transmitter site for Central Region of Peninsular Malaysia, notably Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. Outside Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, Gunung Ulu Kali transmitter tower can cover more areas in neighboring states by following locations below:

1. Pahang: Bentong, Karak, Lanchang, Kuala Lipis, Sungai Koyan, Benta, Padang Tengku, Merapoh, Mentakab, Temerloh, Kuala Krau, Jengka, Chenor, Maran, Bera, Teriang, Kemayan, part of Raub and part of Keratong/Muadzam Shah

2. Perak: Tanjung Malim, Slim River, Sungkai, Bidor, Terolak, Tapah, Langkap, Teluk Intan, Bagan Datuk, Hutan Melintang, Sitiawan, Lumut, Chenderong Balai, Temoh, Chenderiang, Ayer Tawar, Bota, Kampung Gajah and part of Kinta Valley (eg: Batu Gajah, Teronoh, Seri Iskandar)

3. Negeri Sembilan: Mantin, Nilai, Lenggeng, Pedas, Port Dickson, Simpang Pertang, Linggi, Lukut and part of Seremban

4. Melaka: Masjid Tanah, Kuala Sungai Baru, Sungai Udang, Lubuk Cina, Tanjung Kling and part of Alor Gajah

Certainly, Gunung Ulu Kali radio signal can be detected weakly in part of Johor (eg: Batu Anam/Segamat) and Kelantan (Gua Musang) too.

It is ok if Kool 101 moves its Klang Valley frequency's transmitter site from Bukit Sungai Besi to Gunung Ulu Kali by retaining the frequency on FM 101.3MHz because it complies the minimum frequency separation requirement by comparing the existing station.

Previously I was used to suggest Kool 101 to launch Seremban frequency on 101.1MHz in Bukit Gun transmitter to cover Seremban only, but this frequency cannot be used anymore in Seremban's Bukit Gun if FM 101.3MHz is transmitted from Gunung Ulu Kali because 101.1MHz will be sandwiched by Selangor FM 100.9MHz and Kool 101 FM 101.3MHz which both are from Gunung Ulu Kali. Otherwise, the listeners may hear interference noise of two radio stations on 101.1MHz outside Seremban like Mantin, Sendayan, Rantau and Labu, unless the interference is well-controlled.

To gain more listeners and revenue, the radio station should use main transmitter site which is strategic for the coverage, instead of alternative site, but subject to the frequency condition.

If Kool 101 FM 101.3MHz is transmitted from Gunung Ulu Kali, then it reaches 1 million listeners weekly, it can compete against Sinar FM and Suria FM stiffly with further coverage expansion in Ipoh and Kuantan (subject to frequencies availability), however there is no way of the coverage expansion for Kool 101 in Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor via FM frequency because these areas have no more empty frequencies slots.

Radio Romania International Spanish broadcast SW 11730kHz and SW 15170kHz received in Malaysia (Balakong, Selangor)

It is my 5th year of tuning Radio Romania International via shortwave frequencies transmission in 2025. Although Radio Romania International had greatly reduced the English broadcast airtime due to budget constraints, but it doesn't stop me from monitoring its signal because I continue monitoring Radio Romania International shortwave frequencies signal in other languages broadcast.

From 2021 to 2024, alongside English, I had managed to tune Arabic, Romanian and Spanish broadcast of Radio Romania International in Malaysia. On 1st May 2025, in conjunction with Labor's Day holiday, I wake up in the morning, then I record and monitor the shortwave signal of Radio Romania International Spanish broadcast at my home in Balakong, Selangor, Malaysia.

Videos are recorded in 4K HDR resolution by using Sony Xperia 5 V smartphone camera.

I monitor two frequencies today on SW 11730kHz and SW 15170kHz. Both are transmitted from Tiganesti, Romania, but different targeting coverage. SW 11730kHz targets Central America, meanwhile SW 15170kHz targets South America. These frequencies are used from 30th March 2025 until 25th October 2025.

In Malaysia, Radio Romania International Spanish broadcast on SW 11730kHz is louder and clearer than 15170kHz. To tune Radio Romania International Spanish broadcast via shortwave, regardless summer or winter seasons, I suggest to tune the frequency which targets Central America region because the signal beams to Central America from Tiganesti can overspill to South East Asia.

In Malaysia and ASEAN, SW 11730kHz is the best summer shortwave frequency to tune Radio Romania International Spanish broadcast for the year of 2025.

Radio reception report of Radio Romania International in Malaysia (2025)

First time to tune China National Radio CNR-17 Kazakh channel in Malaysia via shortwave

China National Radio operates many shortwave broadcast for its many radio stations such as:

1. CNR-1 Voice of China

2. CNR-2 Business Radio

3. CNR-5 Cross-Straits Radio

4. CNR-6 Shenzhou Easy Radio

5. CNR-7 Radio The Greater Bay

6. CNR-8 Ethnic Minority Radio

7. CNR-11 Tibetan Radio

8. CNR-13 Uyghur Radio

9. CNR-17 Kazakh Radio

From 2019 till 2024, I had tuned CNR-1, CNR-2, CNR-5, CNR-6, CNR-7, CNR-11 and CNR-13 in Malaysia via shortwave frequencies. Receiving location is in Balakong, Selangor state where is not far from Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia.

On 18th April 2025, at 2101 hours (UTC+8), I finally received China National Radio CNR-17 Kazakh broadcast in Malaysia via shortwave frequency transmission.

Basically China National Radio CNR-17 cannot be received in Malaysia via shortwave because the transmitters don't beam to ASEAN as it caters Kazakh listeners in China and surrounding countries. In the past, I was used to try receiving this radio station via shortwave frequencies, but signal was negative.

Until 18th April 2025, I made my first ever shortwave radio listening by tuning CNR-17 in Malaysia on SW 4850kHz.

CNR-17 broadcasts with 7 shortwave frequencies such as 4850kHz, 6015kHz, 7340kHz, 9470kHz, 9630kHz, 11630kHz, and 12055kHz. In Malaysia, I could only receive weak signal on 4850kHz, meanwhile rest of the frequencies have no signal.

4850kHz is transmitted from Urumqi, Xinjiang Province, China, transmitted at 100kW power with OMNI-directional antenna.

Signal was mild when I tuned in Balakong, Selangor, Malaysia.
