Life FM 93.75MHz and 94PFM We Love Satun FM 94.0MHz from Satun, Thailand received at Gunung Jerai top peak

At Gunung Jerai top peak, I received many radio stations from different locations. For Thailand, I usually received from Songkhla Hat Yai (Khao Kho Hong), Yala (Khao Pokyo) and Satun (Khuan Khan), the furthest Thailand radio station that I received there was from Phatthalung (MCOT FM 95.75MHz).

RTM Penang state station Mutiara FM does have a repeater in Gunung Jerai on FM 93.9MHz to target Batu Feringghi, Tanjung Bungah, Tanjung Tokong and Teluk Bahang where FM 95.7MHz Bukit Penara is not receivable in these areas. FM 93.9MHz was operating at low power transmitter and it doesn't cover Kedah and Perlis.

Actually the receiving condition of Mutiara FM 93.9MHz was not clear at Gunung Jerai top peak, I strongly believe RTM Mutiara FM 93.9MHz is using directional panel antenna. Next, I received both Thailand radio stations where are closed to Mutiara FM 93.9MHz, there were Life FM 93.75MHz from La-Ngu, Satun and 94PFM We Love Satun from Amphoe Mueang Satun.

The receiving condition of two radio stations are a bit weak at Gunung Jerai top peak, but I didn't really detect the interference noise from Mutiara FM 93.9MHz, but Mutiara FM 93.9MHz had a bit interference noise from 94PFM We Love Satun.

The distance from Gunung Jerai top peak to La-Ngu Thailand is 140km, meanwhile from Gunung Jerai top peak to 94PFM transmission site in Amphoe Mueang Satun is 101km. About these two Thailand radio stations from Satun province, the frequency separation is 250kHz, but distance of both transmission site is 39km. Both of them are operating at 500W transmitter power, and they're classified as community and commercial radio stations.

IKIM FM and Thailand Parliament radio station are having co-channel interference in Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia

In northern region of Malaysia, Islamic radio station IKIM FM operates in Gunung Jerai on the frequency FM 89.0MHz to cover Penang, Kedah, Perlis and North Perak (Taiping).

Before June 2016, although IKIM FM 89.0MHz was transmitted from Gunung Jerai, but Penang could not receive it because it was from Lower Gunung Jerai (CELCOM tower). Therefore, Penang received FM 89.0MHz was Thailand Parliament Radio from Yala (Khao Pokyo). In order to cover Penang and North Perak from Gunung Jerai on FM 89.0MHz, IKIM FM transmits from TM Upper Jerai instead. Therefore, this allows Penang and North Perak to receive IKIM FM loudly and clearly, meanwhile Thailand Parliament Radio FM 89.0MHz Yala was no longer receivable in Penang and Kedah.

Malaysia and Thailand has joint technical committee to discuss about border coordination studies on telecommunication transmission. Both agreed that minimum frequency separation between Gunung Jerai and Yala for FM broadcast is 100kHz, but IKIM FM and Parliament Radio from Thailand was 0kHz.

When I was in Ipoh, the biggest surprise was I received two different radio stations on FM 89.0MHz, there were IKIM FM and Thailand Parliament channel.

About the broadcast coverage, IKIM FM 89.0MHz covers only Kedah, Perlis, Penang and North Perak at 2kW transmitter power, meanwhile Thailand Parliament Radio FM 89.0MHz covers Yala (except Betong), Narathiwat and Pattani to deliver parliament message to the community in that region.

Thailand Parliament Radio FM 89.0MHz covers most of Yala districts, but receiving condition in Betong is not good, technically Betong is not the parliament radio station coverage and market. Same as Radio Thailand Yala FM 92.0MHz, 94.25MHz and 95.0MHz, they don't cover Betong, instead launch Radio Thailand Betong FM 93.0MHz as district radio station to cater Betong listeners there.

As there is co-channel interference detected between IKIM FM and Thailand Parliament radio stations on FM 89.0MHz in Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia where I recorded at Perak Cave Temple, but the location that I detected is not their broadcast area, just find something interesting about the interference.

When comes to Betong, Thailand, actually IKIM FM 89.0MHz cannot be received there, but Thailand Parliament channel FM 89.0MHz from Yala (Khao Pokyo) is still receivable in Betong without co-channel interference. I believe that there is no co-channel interference between IKIM FM and Thailand Parliament channel in Betong, Thailand. Therefore, no frequency migration is needed to be done between both.

RTM Perlis FM receiving condition in Langkawi Island

RTM Perlis FM is the RTM's northernmost state radio station to serve Perlis state, it broadcasts on FM 102.9MHz from RTM Padang Pauh transmitting site at 2kW transmitter power. From Padang Pauh transmitting site, Perlis FM covers whole state, also part of North Kedah. 

Alor Setar can still receive Perlis FM 102.9MHz, but unclear receiving quality.

For Langkawi Island, although it is not far from Perlis, but Perlis FM 102.9MHz is not receivable there because the transmission site Padang Pauh is low height area. In terms of geographical condition, most of Perlis areas are flat land, except Wang Kelian where has terrains. For transmission coverage, Langkawi cannot receive Perlis FM 102.9MHz because the island is full of mountains. This never gives any listeners impact because Langkawi is not broadcast area of Perlis FM, but listeners can continue listen to the station through online and RTM Mobile app.

In Langkawi, when you tune to FM 102.9MHz, it is very hard to get Perlis FM, but the signal of FM 102.9MHz is usually adjacent channel noise from Thailand radio station, named Thor Por Sii FM 103.0MHz from Trang province (4th Army Radio).

Interference each other is found in Langkawi, but Thor Por Sii FM 103.0MHz interference to Perlis FM 102.9MHz is more than the interference of Perlis FM 102.9MHz to Thor Por Sii FM 103.0MHz because Thor Por Sii FM 103.0MHz Trang operates high transmission power 3.5kW, its station is receivable in Thung Wa (North Satun province, next to Palian district of Trang province).

I was used to receive both stations in Langkawi. At the hotel, I could received both, but Thor Por Sii FM 103.0MHz is a bit stronger than Perlis FM 102.9MHz. 

Thor Por Sii FM 103.0MHz can be received in Kuah, Langkawi with weaker signal condition, I received at Dataran Lang. Perlis FM has no signal there. At top peak of Gunung Raya, I could capture both stations, but Perlis FM 102.9MHz has more interference noise from Thor Por Sii FM 103.0MHz Trang province, Thailand.

Perlis FM 102.9MHz is also not receivable in Langkawi's neighbour island, named Ko Lipe. Thailand's Ko Lipe Island gets interference noise from Thor Por Sii FM 103.0MHz Trang too when tune the radio dial on FM 102.9MHz.

Thailand FM radio stations received in Taiping, Perak, Malaysia?

After sharing about my listening and receiving experience of Thailand radio stations in Sitiawan, Teluk Intan and Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia, actually Taiping, Perak can receive few Thailand radio stations, 2 are from Satun and 1 is from Betong.

Here are Thailand radio stations that received in Taiping, Perak, Malaysia:

1. Radio Thailand Satun FM 99.5MHz (212km)
2. MCOT Satun FM 93.25MHz (212km)
3. Radio Thailand Betong FM 93.0MHz (105km)




The biggest surprise is Taiping could receive Thailand FM radio stations from Satun province, that's very strange. Radio Thailand Satun FM 99.5MHz and MCOT Satun FM 93.25MHz were spotted in Taiping.

 

Based on the video, FM 93.25MHz and FM 99.5MHz have no interference from other radio stations in Taiping, Perak, Malaysia. I strongly believe that it is just a tropospheric propagation when received Thailand FM radio stations from Satun because two of them are not available for all the time.

Radio Thailand Satun FM 95.5MHz is not available in Taiping, although during tropospheric propagation because 95.5 was overlapped by Perak FM 95.6MHz from Gunung Kledang. Actually Perak FM 95.6MHz Gunung Kledang is still receivable in Taiping, but its reception is just weak.

During the tropospheric propagation, aside from Taiping, Radio Thailand Satun FM 99.5MHz and MCOT Satun FM 93.25MHz somehow were receivable in Teluk Intan and Sitiawan.

Radio DSB FM 93.8MHz from Deli Serdang, Indonesia spotted in Langkawi, Kedah, Malaysia

As we notice that Langkawi Island can receive Malaysia local radio stations (Gunung Raya and some Gunung Jerai), also from Thailand (Satun), but surprisingly Langkawi can receive some Indonesia FM radio stations.

The most impressive DXing of Indonesia radio stations in Langkawi Island, Malaysia is receiving Radio DSB FM 93.8MHz from Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra. As Mutiara FM 93.9MHz Gunung Jerai is just beaming only to southwest direction (Northern of Penang Island), so Langkawi areas will not receive the radio station, unless using high sensitivity radio receiver.

Mutiara FM 93.9MHz Gunung Jerai is not receivable in Langkawi, it was interfered by 94PFM We Love Satun where is on FM 94.0MHz, even it was also interfered by DSB FM 93.8MHz there.

The distance between Deli Serdang to Langkawi is 323km. According to the video who uploaded by Saiful Izham, DSB FM 93.8MHz reception showed STEREO signal in Langkawi Island.

Apart from DSB FM 93.8MHz, certain Langkawi areas somehow could receive Mora FM 91.3MHz and Radio Maria FM 104.2MHz (Medan) too.

My experience of receiving Indonesia FM radio stations in Sitiawan, Perak, Malaysia.

After I captured two Thailand FM radio stations from Satun province (Radio Thailand Satun FM 99.5MHz and MCOT Satun FM 93.25MHz) in Sitiawan, Perak, Malaysia, I also received another two FM radio stations from Indonesia province there.

Two Indonesia FM radio stations that I received in Sitiawan, Perak, Malaysia were:

1. Sergai FM 92.5MHz from Sei Rampah, North Sumatra province.
2. Radio DSB FM 93.8MHz from Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra province.

The distance from these two radio stations transmitting locations to Sitiawan, Perak, Malaysia are:

1. Radio DSB FM 93.8MHz Deli Serdang: 235km

2. Sergai FM 92.5MHz Sei Rampah: 189km

Another two local radio stations on FM 93.9MHz such as Bernama Radio from Kuala Lumpur Tower and RTM Mutiara FM Gunung Jerai were receivable there, but they were interfered by Radio DSB FM 93.8MHz from Indonesia, meanwhile Sergai FM 92.5MHz is slightly louder and clearer than Radio DSB FM 93.8MHz, but Sergai FM 92.5MHz was just having a bit interference from Hitz FM 92.7MHz Gunung Kledang.

Radio DSB FM 93.8MHz Deli Serdang and Sergai FM 92.5MHz Sei Rampah from Indonesia were very powerful, but I have no information about their exact transmitter sites and transmission power. 

This was my second time of receiving Indonesia radio stations in Sitiawan, Malaysia, meanwhile the first time receiving was back to February 2015 where I received FM 92.5MHz Indonesia radio stations, but I did not record any videos during that time.

My listening and DXing experience of Thailand FM radio stations in Perak, Malaysia (PART 3: Ipoh)

In Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia, the radio stations are usually transmitted from Gunung Kledang mainly, but few weaker signal of distant radio stations from Gunung Brinchang, and Bukit Larut are available. During Chinese New Year 2020 holiday, I went to Ipoh, including Kek Look Tong in Rapat Indah, and Perak Cave Temple at Jalan Kuala Kangsar.

When I was at Kek Look Tong, other than Gunung Kledang, Bukit Larut and Gunung Brinchang, I captured Fly FM 89.9MHz from Bukit Penara, IKIM FM 89.0MHz Gunung Jerai and RTM Bukit Palong (Nasional FM 89.7MHz and Minnal FM 93.3MHz), but I received Radio Thailand Betong FM 93.0MHz there.

Received Radio Thailand Betong FM 93.0MHz at Kek Look Tong, Ipoh, Perak.

The distance from Betong to Kek Look Tong temple is 135km. At there, Radio Thailand Betong FM 93.0MHz that I received was playing Thailand National Anthem at 8am (Thailand time), then airing Bangkok news. 



I received Radio Thailand Betong FM 93.0MHz at Kek Look Tong temple (nearby car park) in Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia by standing at stationary position, but I could hear little interference noise from Nasional FM 93.1MHz Gunung Brinchang.

I received Radio Thailand Betong FM 93.0MHz at both places in Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia (Kek Look Tong and Perak Cave Temple).

Next, Perak Cave Temple at Jalan Kuala Kangsar, Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia is the most impressive radio DXing (receiving distant radio stations) ever because I captured four Thailand FM radio stations such as:

1. Radio Thailand Betong FM 93.0MHz
2. Radio Thailand Yala FM 95.0MHz
3. Thailand Parliament Radio Station Yala FM 89.0MHz
4. MCOT Yala FM 102.5MHz

Radio Thailand Yala FM 95.0MHz, Thailand Parliament Radio Station FM 89.0MHz and MCOT Yala FM 102.5MHz are transmitted from Khao Pokyo, Bannang Sata district, Yala province of Thailand, the distance to Perak Cave Temple, Malaysia is 191km, meanwhile distance from Betong is 125km.



At Perak Cave Temple, I could detect interference noise from Gunung Jerai radio stations on two Yala FM radio stations. At higher peak of Perak Cave temple, Radio Thailand Yala FM 95.0MHz was clear, but interference impact from Radio Klasik FM 94.9MHz Gunung Jerai is low when receive at low peak (Perak Cave temple outside entrance). In addition, I could detect co-channel interference between IKIM FM and Thailand Parliament Radio Station on FM 89.0MHz when I was at the second floor of Perak Cave Temple.

MCOT Yala FM 102.5MHz was the hardest to be received there unless I go to middle peak of the cave.

   

All Thailand FM radio stations that I detected in Ipoh, Malaysia are MONO signal, but Radio Thailand Yala FM 95.0MHz showed unstable STEREO indicator if point receiving antenna to right direction.

 

Other than 3 Yala radio stations, the rest like Radio Thailand Yala FM 92.0MHz and FM 94.25MHz are unable to be received in Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia, despite tropospheric propagation because both frequencies are fully covered by Ai FM 92.1MHz and Mix FM 94.3MHz from Gunung Kledang which is local transmitter site for Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia.

During the whole week of Chinese New Year festival in 2020, I believed that all Thailand FM radio stations that I received in Ipoh, Sitiawan and Teluk Intan were classified as tropospheric propagation because I'm not able to receive them at most of the time.

Before ending these stories, I would like to conclude what Thailand FM radio stations that I detected in Perak, Malaysia during 2020 Chinese New Year festival.

My listening and DXing experience of Thailand FM radio stations in Perak, Malaysia (PART 2: Teluk Intan)

After PART 1 in Sitiawan, let's move on to PART 2. In my opinion, this PART 2 article of receiving Thailand FM radio stations in Perak, Malaysia is the most impressive FM DXing ever. In the past years, Gunung Jerai is the furthest radio station that I received in Teluk Intan where its distance is 206km, following by Gunung Telapak Burok where distance is 177km only.

Teluk Intan is also part of my hometown, it's my mother's actual hometown, so I usually go there twice annually. I definitely come to Teluk Intan every Chinese New Year celebration.

For 2020 Chinese New Year, Gunung Jerai is no longer classified as furthest radio station that I received in Teluk Intan anymore in my FM DXing record, now Satun Thailand is the furthest radio station signal that I received in Teluk Intan, then following by Yala Thailand.

In the past, I never been used to receive any Thailand FM radio stations in Teluk Intan, Malaysia, but I received three Thailand FM radio stations there on January 2020. There are:

1. Radio Thailand Satun FM 99.5MHz
2. MCOT Satun FM 93.25MHz
3. Radio Thailand Yala FM 95.0MHz

In Teluk Intan, I captured Radio Thailand Satun FM 99.5MHz, MCOT Satun FM 93.25MHz and Radio Thailand Yala FM 95.0MHz nearby Perak River, especially evening and morning during tropospheric propagation.

On another day, I caught MCOT Satun FM 93.2MHz and Radio Thailand Satun FM 99.5MHz at Jalan Sithambaram Pillay (nearby river) in the car after I had breakfast at Teck Kee Dim Sum restaurant with family members, they were quite loud seriously. MCOT FM 93.25MHz is obviously faded rapidly when the car moved and interfered by RTM Nasional FM 93.1MHz from Gunung Brinchang. The distance from Tambon Khuan Khan, Satun, Thailand to Teluk Intan, Perak, Malaysia is 310km.

Besides that, I captured Radio Thailand Yala FM 95.0MHz at nearby Perak River in Teluk Intan in the sunny morning, the radio station broadcasts in Pattani Malay language. It is very difficult to capture its signal there, somehow I could hear interference noise from another distant radio station RTM Radio Klasik FM 94.9MHz Gunung Jerai there. When I received Radio Thailand Yala FM 95.0MHz in Teluk Intan, I could detect the interference between Radio Klasik FM 94.9MHz Gunung Jerai and Radio Yala FM 95.0MHz on my radio receiver TECSUN PL-380 once if I moved.


  

Yes, I finally received Thailand FM radio signals in Teluk Intan, Perak. Therefore, the next could be in Bagan Datuk and Selangor Sabak Bernam/Sungai Ayer Tawar? I will try it on May 2020 in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri festival.

My listening and DXing experience of Thailand FM radio stations in Perak, Malaysia (PART 1: Sitiawan)

It is common if TV and radio neighboring countries can be received in a bordering area of a country because the neighboring countries TV/radio transmitter sites are not far from bordering area of the country. When a bordering area can receive neighboring countries TV/radio stations, this greatly attracts many residents in bordering regions to watch and listen to their TV and radio stations respectively.

Malaysia is an example. Many Johor people love to listen to Singapore FM radio stations because Singapore radio stations carry better content than local radio stations, even free-to-air TV stations. Same goes to Kedah, Perlis, Perak and Kelantan bordering areas, where Thailand TV and radio stations can be received there.

Talking about Thailand radio stations, although I don't understand the language (only few I know such as Sawadeekrap สวัสดีครับ, Khob Kun Krap ใช่ ครับ, Aroi Mak อร่อยมา and Thai's number pronouncements), but I feel it is interesting when comes to receive Thailand radio stations in Malaysia.

15 years ago, I received Thailand AM radio stations in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia usually at the evening during sunset such as Radio Thailand AM 891kHz, Radio Saranrom MW 1575kHz, and Songkhla based AM 1269kHz/1404kHz. It is common to receive Thailand AM radio stations at night in Malaysia because of AM propagation allows far distance transmission at night or after sunset.

Until late 2013, it was my very first time to receive a Thailand FM radio station in Penang, Malaysia. On December 2013, the first Thailand FM radio station that I received in Penang was Parliament Radio FM 89.0MHz, transmitted from Khao Pokyo, Yala province, Thailand. During that time, IKIM FM 89.0MHz was transmitted in Celcom's Lower Jerai where unable to cover Penang, cause I could receive Thailand radio station on 89.0MHz in Penang.

From 2015 to 2019, I received a lot of Thailand FM radio stations in Penang, Kedah, and Langkawi Island, all of receiving condition videos are available on YouTube. Now we're in 2020, Chinese New Year is almost ended. I almost perform radio receiving test every Chinese New Year in Perak, but for this year, 2020 Chinese New Year is very impressive one because I captured Thailand FM radio stations in three Perak locations, there are Sitiawan, Ipoh, and Teluk Intan.

Before sharing my listening experience in these 3 locations, my very first of receiving Thailand FM radio station in Perak, Malaysia was in Bagan Datuk. I captured MCOT Satun FM 93.25MHz in Bagan Datuk, Perak, Malaysia on 15th June 2018 (Hari Raya Aidilfitri festival), the distance from Satun to Bagan Datuk is 303km. In this video, MCOT Satun FM 93.25MHz was playing Thailand National Anthem at 7pm (Malaysia time UTC+8) and starting to relay Radio Thailand Bangkok content. 


Next,  I was used to receive Radio Thailand Betong FM 93.0MHz in Kuala Kangsar.


In addition, I also received Radio Thailand Satun FM 99.5MHz in Taiping, Perak, Malaysia (PLUS Highway) on 31st August 2019.

 Let's talk by locations.

1. Sitiawan

Every year of Chinese New Year festive season, I usually go to Sitiawan, Perak with family to eat "Red Wine Mee Suah" (a popular Chinese food in Sitiawan) and visit Tua Pek Kung Temple. The Red Wine Mee Suah is tasty actually.

At Tua Pek Kung temple, previously I captured the furthest radio stations signal were from Seremban/Gunung Telapak Burok, Kuala Lumpur Tower and Gunung Jerai, but I received Indonesia and Thailand radio stations at Tua Pek Kung temple in Sitiawan, Perak during Chinese New Year 2020 (later I will share about my listening experience of Indonesia radio stations in Perak, Malaysia).

On 26th January 2020, I received two Thailand FM radio stations in Sitiawan, Perak, Malaysia, there were:

1. Radio Thailand Satun FM 99.5MHz
2. MCOT Satun FM 93.25MHz

Both are transmitted from Tambon Khuan Khan, Satun province, Thailand. Transmitting distance to Sitiawan, Perak, Malaysia is 284km.

By receiving two Thailand radio stations from Satun in Sitiawan, Perak, Malaysia, I used TECSUN PL-380 receiver, receiving signals were in MONO, but no interference from other radio stations when stay in stationary position. For MCOT Satun FM 93.25MHz, I could only hear a little interference from Nasional FM 93.1MHz Gunung Brinchang, but Nasional FM 93.1MHz was also weak there.






Next, for Part 2, I will share about my experience of receiving and listening to Thailand FM radio stations in Teluk Intan, Perak.

Following above, it is the coverage availability of Thailand digital terrestrial television stations in Malaysia.

Green: 95%-100% of signal strength

Yellow: 90%-95% of signal strength

Red: 70%-90% of signal strength

The signal strength of Thailand TV stations is depended on the type and quality of antenna, including geographical locations and antenna installation method. For better and more stable receiving condition, I highly suggest to install higher outdoor antenna like Johor receives Singapore TV channels, and 37e antenna is highly recommended outdoor antenna.

Indoor antenna is not recommended to be installed in Malaysia if watching Thailand TV stations, unless in Pengkalan Hulu, where is next to Betong Thailand only.  

To receive Thailand TV stations in Malaysia (as per locations listed above), first you must have:

1. TV set-top-box (for old TV unit has no digital tuner)

2. TV with digital tuner (DVB-T2 standards)

3. 37e UHF outdoor antenna (it is better to install higher)

As NBTC is auctioning 700MHz, 1800MHz, 2600MHz and 26GHz bands for 5G mobile services, I believe Thailand NBTC will migrate selected Thailand digital TV multiplex frequencies again to avoid interference to new 5G services like Malaysia MYTV is going to migrate selected digital terrestrial television frequencies.

UHF 500MHz and 600MHz are the recommended spectrum bands for digital terrestrial television services.

Announcement: MYTV myFreeview will change DTT frequencies in selected locations

Malaysia will be going to launch 5G mobile technology and MCMC (Malaysia Communications Multimedia Commission) will assign UHF 700MHz band as 5G mobile service bands. In addition, UHF 700MHz will be opened for tendering to all telecommunications service providers in Malaysia.

Currently there are few locations using UHF700MHz band for digital terrestrial television broadcasting, but MYTV announces that frequencies for certain locations will be changed within Q1 2020. Here are the locations:
